Opps! I saw "Idaho" as your location. Island Park is in the area along the Snake River by Ashton, Henry's Fork and Henry's Lake. Pretty close to your area.

Yep I'm in ID Twin Falls to be a little more exact but this season I will be hunting Montana. I'll have to look up Ashton" to see where it is.

Ashton ID is north of Rexberg ID, way north of me.

Did you ever get out to shooting it? I love mine. Reload using 13 gr of unique with hsm 405 gr lead and home cast 405gr flat nose. Also working on a couple of hotter loads, but haven’t settled.

I put a Williams peep on the rear and trigger happy trigger kit in it and like it a lot.

I’ll take it pig hunting soon.

Oh, man. That sounds like just the ticket! I have a Happy Trigger in my 1894CS357 and want one for my FG. What diameter insert are you using with the Williams? One more Q: how fast is your slug travelling with that 13 grains Unique?

          Thanks for your time!

              I like your style! Thanks!

400 grains at 1100+ is no laughing matter. Talk about momentum...

Lots of info on this load is online(and published). Here’s one source.

I tried to embed this but it isn’t working

45-70 is a fun round. I have cigar boxes loaded full of those unique loads for plinking. I’ve also shot the 405gr up to about 1800fps and Hornady 325gr out towards 2200fps. Those kill the shoulder and the stock punches me in the cheek bone, so I don’t shoot many.... haha.

This time of year is great. Take all the pumpkins and fill them with water. Then, shoot those pumpkins with a 2200fps 325gr FTX. It literally explodes them into a 30 yard radius.

If you were asking me yes I did and for this season I settled on a load of 40.5 gr. of IMR 4189 behind a Sierra 300 gr. FNHP. Zeroed 2 inches high at 50 yards which is about to far for hunting in the willows, it will be just about perfect for the timber I hunt in. The trigger is not to bad but the happy trigger is on the list of to do. Until I decide on a peep sight I'm using a Nikon scope on it. I need to put swivel bases on it to so I can sling it up.

Lyman 48 for 95 Marlin and Win. 86 I sub. the Sierra for the Nosler and worked up to the 40.5 gr. load. Book max for those rifles is 41 and I do believe the 40.5 gr IMR 4198 is mild enough to take it the other 1/2 grain and maybe a bit more. The book lists the 41 gr load out of a 24 inch barrel at 1,780 but mine is short at 18.5 inches so I'm guessing around 1,600 or so. It needs to be shot over the Crony to get a real velocity. Accuracy is good but at 50 yards it's not a real test. I bought a couple of boxes of the Barns ammo for another 45-75 and they shot good in it but I have yet to try them in the Marlin. Should I ever go out to Calif. and end up hunting on the ranch with this I would just check the zero and re set it and use the factory ammo. I like the Barns bullets but just don't get in a hurry to develop anything for it right now. I think if I was like you with limited time I would do that until you could get into it some. HTH

I have a few BP loads to try out for the 95, 66 gr of 2FG under a 30 card and a Lee 350 gr flat plain base cast lubed with a Javelina (SP?) type lube to try out to. They crimp at the top ring and cycle perfect through the 95 but are harder than the 1-20 or 1-30 mix. More like a soft wheel weight or soft #2. I have some other stuff loaded up to try but haven't been shooting enough to get into that yet, soon as hunting season is over and we have good weather I'm going to get deeper in it. I've been messing with my 6.5 more than anything else of late.

Sounds like we are in the same boat. I can’t garauntee I’ll get to developing a Barnes 45-70 load, but it’s on the list. I’ll try to keep you posted when I do get some work done with it.

Try out the unique loads I mentioned if you have some laying around. They’re a lot of fun and I get a little smoke puff out of mine that can be big enough to obsure the target for a second. Makes a nice practice load.

I'm using RCBS dies and the Lee Factory crimp die, they work good. If your going to load some BP loads get the Winchester brass not that it's so good but that it's supposed to be the thinnest cases made so you can cram in more BP. For heavy smokeless loads I just bought some star-line to use. I'll copy down and save your load to try. Thanks very much.
