Thanks guys! He's a lever action nut and me and my two sisters were going to split it three ways so $3K was pretty much the budget but we can stretch it a few hundred. I think the original one I was thinking of was Big Horn Armory http://www.bighornarmory.com/ but it appears they make pretty much just huge pistol caliber stuff. Very cool, but I think we want a classic .30-30 as he lives in Tennessee.

Wow, I always wanted a SS 45/70 Marlin. This is so nice. I hate when my list gets longer.

If you want something that's powerful enough for deer hunting and can both gate load and tube load, consider the Rossi R92 in .454 Casull. It's not an expensive rifle, but it's the only lever made with both gate and tube loading. The .454 will also drop any deer. Bottom line is it's very practical and very few people have one. It's definitely worth considering.

As someone with two 45-70 Marlins who hunts with them in pretty dusty conditions, I have always wondered whether front loading rifles handle the dust as well. The Henry front loading system seems more prone to dusty intrusion but I would like to hear from folks who have them.

For higher end I would look at the Browning BLR's.

I prefer the BLR and Savage 99 over the Winchester type 92/94. BLR's come in fancy grades. Savage 99 is long out of production, and I don't recall seeing any Presentation Grade.

Nice thing about the BLR, is you can go with many nice cartridges that don't work in a tube magazine...

the Henry Long Ranger vs. BLR (I own neither however):
Long Ranger has better trigger, spare magazines are 4 times cheaper, is 10 times easier to reassemble after taking fully apart, barrel screws on the receiver, the magazine is flush to the stock on the Henry, hangs down on the Browning.



But the BLR can take true magnum calibers like Rem 7mm mag, 300 win mag, 16 calibers to choose, whereas the Henry LR has only 3 to chose from.

That's the limitation. I wish the Long Ranger came in a couple other calibers.
