And I forgot to mention anyone on CalGuns can send me a PM and shoot one of my guns at a match.
I only need the PM so I can remember to bring a spare gun and enough ammunition for all interested. The gun pictured has yet to be fired but Skeeters work has never failed me and sub half inch groups at 100 yards shouldn't be a problem.
If there is enough interest we can even hold a non-Match just for new shooters to get them a hit at 2000 yards+.
I don't shoot prone because I have a cage a plate and 4 screws holding my neck together and I like to be comfortable when I am shooting. That means a portable bench and a drummers throne for me.
All my guns have extremely light triggers so once anyone gets used to that they are good to go.
I also only use Nightforce scopes with MOA not MIL because I am an old Benchrest shooter not a sniper.
Luckily where we shoot there is a huge rock we can sight in on that makes seeing the bullet splashes easier.

I reread my post and I didn't state it as I meant it to come out.

The 223 and 308 hits at 2000+ yards are completely doable undertaking.



Now staple a second target up above the first target and make your point of impact 16 inches above your point of aim and shoot another 5 shot group.

We had one shooter holding up in a tree at a dead snag using subtensions just to get in the general ballpark of the gong.
We had another holding 10 mils low in the canyon below the gong because of too much slope in his rail.
It can be done but it's very hard to do it this way and plenty of ammo and barrel wear are used up in the process.
It is much easier to use the correct elevation even in a sub-par chambering.
We are lucky that with all the newer high BC bullets shooting a gong at a mile is becoming almost commonplace.
0.747 6mm bullets and 0.800 30 caliber bullets are just a click away and fast twist barrels that used to take a year to get are now in stock and at your door in a week.
Couple that with a gunsmith like Billy Goat Machine and some fast turnaround times and a guy/gal can be shooting a full blown custom in a couple months now instead of a year and a half like when I started.

I thought I've heard of a scope with zero stop that had the full travel available for dialing after the zero was set. Seems like you could zero it at 4 feet high (or whatever) at 100 and still be able to dial for 2000.

The zero stops work almost like a regular scope.
On a regular scope like my Nightforces you sight in at 100 yards remove the Allen screws and the turret lifts off. You then turn the turret so the zero is facing you and reinstall the turret knob and retighten the setscrews.
On a zero stop scope you do basically the same thing but you lock the scope out so you can't dial it down below the 100 yard setting. The zero stop feature allows you to return to your 100 yard setting without looking at the scope.
On a regular scope you can actually dial it lower than the 100 yard setting.
