Budget Build That Will Go 2000 Yards

I am building several 2000 yard guns so when new shooters come to our matches they have enough scope travel to get hits while holding center mass on the gong.

The action of choice was the 700 Remington because you get the most accuracy for the least amount of money.
The action was purchased on the gun broker auction website along with 2 other 700 actions all bare and all brand new set up for the ultra mag cartridges.
The three actions ran $134 $135 and $139 plus shipping and registration fees.
As I wanted the most accuracy for the least amount of money I ordered up brand new bolts from Pacific Tool and Gauge. I wanted the least amount of bolt slop so I ordered the bolts with a 0.704 bolt body which won't even fit in the action until it is trued up. I wanted extra long bolt handles straight and with a knob that was easily worked with gloves in the winter. I went with the 0.062 firing pin to avoid primer problems a Lawton type extra tight bolt shroud a 24 pound spring and the M16 extractor in Lapua or 0.590 boltface.
The recoil lugs are two at 0.250 thick with tapered sides and the third is the standard 0.187 size with tapered sides because I had it on hand.
The three barrels are all stainless steel Bartlein 28 inches long wearing Harrell Bros muzzlebrake. The three barrels are max heavy varmint or 1000 yard taper which is 0.930 at the muzzle.
To give the new shooters the best possible opportunity to get a gong hit at 2000 yards I went with a Tooley MBR stock from McMillan. The stock has a 2.850 wide flat forend so it rides the standard 3 inch Benchrest front bag from Edgewood Bags like it is in ball bearings. The rear buttstock has a slight taper so the gun will recoil down and away from the shooter.
This gives the new shooter two advantages.
By moving down and away there is less felt recoil and secondly you can simply push the gun forward in the bags until the point of aim is the same without having to adjust the front and rear rests.
I had our own Skeeter at Billy goat Machine chamber two of the barrels so far. One is a 338 Norma Ackley Improved and the second is a 338 Lapua Ackley Improved. He offers good pricing great work and most importantly great turn around times. He is very easy to communicate with and the first two guns where both done in weeks not months or years.
The inletted and bedding I did myself with tape as a outline a die grinder and a carbide burr used to hog everything out.
I added Davidson single shot followers to the first two actions so single feeding rounds from the bench is effortless.
I need to finish the trigger guard mortise and put the final bedding on them then I will head to the range and let some CalGuns members see how they shoot.
I also did one in 338 Lapua Ackley Improved on a Savage 111 action for the Savage fans.

With the standard throat the 300 grain jacketed bullets run 2950-3035 FPS depending on which powder is used. Typically H1000 Retumbo VVN570. RE25 7828
If you use more freebore or throat the gun for the 300 grain Sierra's which adds 0.175-0.190 more freebore they run 3130-3160 FPS and should shoot 1/2 moa or better.
The Warner 254 Flatlines add more velocity to both groups around 150 FPS extra.

As not everyone is interested in 2000+ yards we will bring them to our local range and shoot some 100 200 and 300 yard groups by fellow CalGun members to see how they shoot up close.
These type guns are what I would normally take with me on a hunting trip for California blacktail. Yes they will weigh around 17 pounds and no I won't be packing them for miles as I have lighter gear for that type of hunting.
I do alot of glassing on big bowls and will setup a portable bench for 400-1100 yards and that's were these will be used for hunting.
100 yards from the truck is about as far as they would normally travel.
Diver is choking on his morning coffee but a setup like this has very little recoil is deadly accurate and ballistically superior to most hunting rounds.
You pay for that in weight and setup time so these are not truck guns for deer crossing the road in the headlights.
Cost so far would be $300 for the bolt assembly $140 for the action $325 for the barrel and $180 for the trigger. The stock was purchased as a flattop and was $350 and the muzzlebrake and recoil lug was another $60. Two packages of JB Weld and a Davidson follower added another $35 to the build so far.

I looked up .30-378 and .338-378 Weatherby's to see how close they could get, and it seems like they pull up short by about 100 fps. Maybe those Warner bullets could get them over the hump.

I looked to see if any Vanguards were chambered in these, but alas, no $600 2000 yard rifles to be had. Still, if I wanted such a rifle, being able to have non-wildcats would appeal to me.

The 30-378 Weatherby pushes a 180 grain bullet at 3500 FPS so the 198 Warner Flatlines or the new 230 Sierra MatchKing make 2000 yards a breeze.
Brass for the big Weatherby is the problem as it cost more than Lapua 50 BMG brass and you only get 2-4 firings before the primer pockets are toast.

Even the Norma made factory brass? Does that mean the brass from the Hornady or Nosler loaded ammo is even worse?

The budget without the scope will be under $2000 including the trigger guard and scope mount.
The gun will work well from 100-2000 yards as a single shot.

                        SigStroker
The factory Norma 30-378 brass is not great brass. I have only tried the Hornady brass once and while I was turning the necks it was very grainy/crystalline so I must have gotten a bad batch. It definitely holds plenty of powder but it's useful life is limited.

                        Flouncer
I am using a die grinder to completely inlet the stock on my own with no milling machine at all.
My barrel channel is square not round and only the end of the forend is contoured to match the barrel plus a 1/8 inch gap for barrel whip.
I don't have any thin cylinders for the recoil lug so I use the same cylinder for the trigger mortise and simply fill in the extra space with the J-B Weld.
Once I have enough clearance I will tape the barrel to lessen the scratching and run some sandpaper down the edges to help straighten out my wavy lines.
I will use some Tap Plastics surfacer and some pink pigment to seal the entire barrel chamber and the bolt mortise. This takes away the white fiberglass look and helps to hide my crude die grinder skills.
I also bed the trigger guard so it sits flat something a guy with a mill never even thinks about.
With a mill I would have made one full length pass with a 1.250 ball end mill for the barrel and one pass with a 1.400 ball end mill for the action and called it good.
The picture shows the end of the forend as it stands for now. 3/8 of inch in from that radius everything is square.

Mr. Dragoman, that looks awesome. Please let us know how they shoot.
Also, what range do you use, any chance it's near San Diego?
