I am building several 2000 yard guns so when new shooters come to our matches they have enough scope travel to get hits while holding center mass on the gong.
The action of choice was the 700 Remington because you get the most accuracy for the least amount of money.
The action was purchased on the gun broker auction website along with 2 other 700 actions all bare and all brand new set up for the ultra mag cartridges.
The three actions ran $134 $135 and $139 plus shipping and registration fees.
As I wanted the most accuracy for the least amount of money I ordered up brand new bolts from Pacific Tool and Gauge. I wanted the least amount of bolt slop so I ordered the bolts with a 0.704 bolt body which won't even fit in the action until it is trued up. I wanted extra long bolt handles straight and with a knob that was easily worked with gloves in the winter. I went with the 0.062 firing pin to avoid primer problems a Lawton type extra tight bolt shroud a 24 pound spring and the M16 extractor in Lapua or 0.590 boltface.
The recoil lugs are two at 0.250 thick with tapered sides and the third is the standard 0.187 size with tapered sides because I had it on hand.
The three barrels are all stainless steel Bartlein 28 inches long wearing Harrell Bros muzzlebrake. The three barrels are max heavy varmint or 1000 yard taper which is 0.930 at the muzzle.
To give the new shooters the best possible opportunity to get a gong hit at 2000 yards I went with a Tooley MBR stock from McMillan. The stock has a 2.850 wide flat forend so it rides the standard 3 inch Benchrest front bag from Edgewood Bags like it is in ball bearings. The rear buttstock has a slight taper so the gun will recoil down and away from the shooter.
This gives the new shooter two advantages.
By moving down and away there is less felt recoil and secondly you can simply push the gun forward in the bags until the point of aim is the same without having to adjust the front and rear rests.
I had our own Skeeter at Billy goat Machine chamber two of the barrels so far. One is a 338 Norma Ackley Improved and the second is a 338 Lapua Ackley Improved. He offers good pricing great work and most importantly great turn around times. He is very easy to communicate with and the first two guns where both done in weeks not months or years.
The inletted and bedding I did myself with tape as a outline a die grinder and a carbide burr used to hog everything out.
I added Davidson single shot followers to the first two actions so single feeding rounds from the bench is effortless.
I need to finish the trigger guard mortise and put the final bedding on them then I will head to the range and let some CalGuns members see how they shoot.
I also did one in 338 Lapua Ackley Improved on a Savage 111 action for the Savage fans.

Still, if I wanted such a rifle, being able to have non-wildcats would appeal to me.
