    I think a 6.5x55 is fine for Elk at 400, but the hunters might have a different idea so I will defer to the elk hunters to answer...

        The farther out, the closer they are in energy; the higher BC takes over. Reloading at close ranges might be able to make up the difference depending on how loose you want to be with the definition (200 ft⋅lb @ 400 yd).
