    Masterpiece Arms

So I went to the Big City, where there's a gunshop that has quite a variety of nice rifles. I fondled and played with: Weatherby Vanguard chassis rifle, Savage Stealth Evolution and one or two other Savages, and a Tikka T3X TAC A1. They had just about everything but Bergaras.

And they had not one, but TWO different Masterpiece Arms rifles built on Curtis Axiom actions. WOW, were they nice. I thought the $1800 Tikka was nice, but it was dog meat compared to the MPA. So I ask the custom rifle fanboi contingent here - how does the Curtis Axiom action measure up with the other actions that find their way into 3-5k dollar rifles?

(Bench guns excluded obv, MPA's are chassis rifles with AICS magazine compatibility, etc)

now this is classic!! have you come full circle sig? i remember you just a few months ago basically saying customs were POS!!

anyway im not here to argue with you but i have a curtis custom in an MPA comp chassis....i posted a few pic of it in one of your threads.

i shot a surgeon 591 for several years...ive also shot a couple of defiance's,a mausingfield several tuned remingtons savage PTA a savage 110BA ECT and i will tell you i personally have not fondled and smoother easier to cock and cycle action...we did a group buy and bought 7 of the CCs and everyone that has one loves them...my surgeon feels like lifting a brick compared to the CC.

now as far as the MPA chassis goes...im a chassis hater and ive shot several and have owned a few...i got behind a guys MPA at a match last year and that night came home and ordered one...after the first time i shot it i came home that night and ordered one for my CZ455 that was in the manners stock.

my build minus the scope and rings was right at $2800...i would not spend close to $2000 bucks on a factory rifle when i can drive a custom for a few more dollars.

I don't want to argue either, but I never said customs were POS, just that I'd rather buy a factory built rifle.

You could say the MPA was a custom or a factory-built, just semantics.

As for the Axiom, cocking it and running the bolt was a marvel - it felt almost like it was cocking itself.

As for the price you paid, I couldn't get anywhere near that. The chassis and action alone would cost me about $2k, and I would still need to get trigger, barrel, and smithing done. Unfortunately I might be able to scrounge up the money to buy this MPA. In some ways I wish I had stopped at playing with the Tikka.

        agreed.

if we lived closer id let you shoot my 47...if you have the money buy the MPA you wont be disappointed...the versatility of the chassis alone is worth the money and as you said the action alone speaks for itself.

i can also tell you that the 3 guys behind this action are the most stand up take care of guys ive ever dealt with...if you do by some small chance have an issue i can guarantee it will be taken care of within a matter of days!

action $975 due to group buy...i think...may have been $1050
        chassis $825
barrel including smith $600 my price is a bit less
        area 419 brake $165
bix N andy tac sport 2 stage $255
        harris bipod $109....$2830-$3005 bucks

          Thanks for your input.

That's pretty close to the retail price of the MPA complete rifle, maybe a little less. There's been a tad of inflation on prices, so I would have to pay a smidgen more than what you listed. For me, it boils down to the original reason my preference is for "factory" built guns - before I touch it, any defective or out-of-spec parts have been found and fixed. MPA will stand behind their 3/8 MOA guarantee. A gunsmith might be able to build a better one, but the difference isn't anything I can take advantage of anyway.

Sig that is a nice setup. Looking to get one just like that in 6.5CM. I will be interested to see how it performs for you. Good luck and congrats.

Are you speaking of longrange1 or ocabj? I never said I had one, just that I looked at one. I think both of the above are custom built, using the MPA chassis, not complete rifles from MPA.

Checked out one of these at my local store, they’re incredibly nice. I might upgrade to one from my 700 once I shoot the barrel out. They also offer a evolution build which uses your 700 action, that would be a pretty nice route to go too and substantially cheaper.

I ended up with a Vudoo Apparition 22LR in a MPA Comp in Tungsten. Mostly for the AICS mag system and 2 stage Huber Trigger. Generally not a fan of the full metal, but in this case the features, like the full length RRS dove dovetails are really nice

How much did that rig run? I think the rifle from MPA is something like $1500. Tough sell considering the Ruger is like $400.

Just a heads up if you find yourself looking at a BA Lite chassis to save a little money...It comes with the RAT dovetail and the inclinometer despite the pics on their website showing it without the dovetail and saying it still has the bubble level. I had one show up today and was pleasantly surprised to see it had the new toys on it.

Oh, I see. You were doing the "trainer" concept, except taken to the extreme instead of using a .223. Yeah, when you're trying to replicate something that has a chassis that runs $900 just by itself, you're not getting off cheap.
