Getting Started in Long Range shooting

Let me just start by saying up front I have limited experience shooting long range, the furthest distance I shoot on a regular basis is out to about 550 yds. I'm looking to get a factory rifle that I can get started shooting out to 1k with. I don't yet reload so I would prefer to stick with .308 Win or 6.5 Creedmoor so I can shoot factory ammo. My budget is $1000 without an optic.

    Model's I'm considering:
    Savage 110 LHR 6.5

    Savage 110 Tactical 6.5/.308

Remington 700 SPS Varmint + KRG Bravo Chassis

    Remington 700 5R Gen 2

I know Savage reworked quite a bit of their line up does anyone have any experience with them yet? The 5R is at the very edge of my budget is is worth the extra money? Are there any other rifles my price range that I should be considering?

Ide say go the spa varmit option with the chassis. Idk maybe just me but I can live with the short barrel, but I hate the flimsy plastic stocks. Plus detachable mags right out the gate.

I'm no expert but if you shoot 500+ yards on a regular basis, I'm curious what you are shooting now (rifle and caliber) to get you to 550 yards?

Im primarily shooting a 5.56 AR-15 (not to 550yds) and a Springfield M1a 6.5 with a Vortex Viper PST Gen 2. I don't have any bolt guns suitable for longer range work, but my brother and I are planing on taking a rifle class this fall and I wanted to get something that I would enjoy shooting that he could potentially borrow for the class, hence why I'm trying to keep it relatively inexpensive

Other options:Weatherby Vanguard Adaptive Composite, comes in .308 and 6.5 Creedmoor. This has the GRS Berserk stock. They have a 20" barrel, so okay for 1000 yards, but probably not so good for the 1500 yard stuff. Also, it has a hinged floorplate instead of a magazine, so not good for PRS type competition. You can find them under $1k.

New model for 2018, Howa with KRG Bravo stock/chassis. They come with long heavy barrels and AICS magazines. Just under $1k.

I think both of the above come with a 1 moa guarantee.

Tikka CTR, which looks more like a traditional hunting rifle, but is still designed for "tactical" purposes.

edit: Oops, forgot the Bergara HMR.

edit #2: The Ruger Precision Rifle has fallen out of favor, so you can find the .308 for well under $1k these days. The 6.5 Creedmoor is harder to find for a low price, but the 6mm Creedmoor is cheap like the .308. 6mm ammo is available online for 18-19 bucks a box, but what's more important is how much it is locally. Shoots flatter with less recoil than .308.

Out of those 4 options only, I would go with the Gen 2 5r and then save a little bit more money while you shoot it and get familiar with it to pick up a chassis down the road. When you are ready, you can sell that HS Precision stock to recover a good chunk of the cost of a Bravo if that is the chassis you are set on. Or if you shoot it and find that ergonomically it works for you without adjustability, you can have it inletted for DBM.

FWIW, because it's not on your list, but I have a Rem 700 police 308 with the 26" heavy barrel and a Bushnell HDMR FFP 3.5-21x with the Horus H-59 reticle. I had no problem getting out to 1k with factory Federal 175 gr ammo. I paid about $1,100 for the rifle after tax and DROS. I've been really pleased with the rifle. The Rem 700 is a great entry platform because there are plenty of options to build it up while you shoot.

700 5r in .308, Bushnell HDMR2, grayboe Ridgeback stock, 600 yards no problem the string after i sighted in the scope. I was hitting the 600 with my first box of 175mks.

Bumslie gpt a .260 with a similar setup, same results.

Cant wait to work up a handload.

Any Rifle that will shoot to 1" or less will do the job. That will include Ruger American Rifles or any of the inexpensive bolt action rifles being made now.

You can't lose with a .308, and it is easy to load for when you get around to it,,, Which should be soon if you are serious about LR shooting.

You may be able to find a 700 5r gen 1 still. I paid less than $700 after the Remington rebate. A proven 1k platform.

At 550, you can literally pick any weapon within the last 75 years and hit a 24x24 easily. Just go with the one you like. At 1k, 2' x 2' is a bit more than 2 MOA. Pretty much all modern production guns can do that with match ammo.

Distance is only part of the formula. What target size are you shooting? Shooting groups on paper?

If you're going to mod a Savage down the road, get a top bolt release for more stock options. If you're good with tools, you can also do a bottom bolt release to TBR conversion.
