Actually I took the bergara to range again yesterday, starting from a cold barrel with two 5*5 groups, 50 in total. There were two sub-moa groups (~0.8moa), while the other 8 are all about 1.5moa to 2moa. So I'm really confused here. Here's one group I made yesterday: https://photos.google.com/share/AF1Q...FWLUZzQ2RxcFBB

Right now I'm suspecting the ADM QD mount as I was told by a few ppl in the range saying it's good for AR but not precision rifle. Just ordered a pair of Badger m40a3 rings to see if it helps.

Honestly, I really wish it's me not the gun or any gears, so I could save money and just more practicing would save the problem. I already talked with Kwikvette@ and fortunately both of us are in bay area so he's going to shoot my gun this Thursday and I'll update here later
QV is a good dude ive never met him but have talked to him i time or two and i think he will be a big help getting your problem straightened out...let us know what happens im curious.

i dont shoot a 308 or factory ammo and you could very well be right but i know several guys that do both and ive yet to see a 308 shooting Federal Gold Metal 168gr that wouldnt hold .75 to 1" groups.

Aren't there a bunch of different Athlon models at different prices? A guy saying "Athlon is good" could be talking about an $800 model and you might have got a $300 model.

Athlon is GREAT and the Cronus is $1,700 with super clear glass, Customer Service is also excellent with transferable lifetime warranty

A 0.8-inch group from a factory rifle and factory random ammo is nothing to sneeze at. He hasn't even tried other ammo yet. maybe . . . .. . bullet weight and bearing length Where the F does everyone get the idea they are Joe sniper and blah blah blah. OP originally stated 2.5 MOA using match ammo with a rifle that's rated as guaranteed sub-moa out of the box.

Take with that the fact that bolt actions are typically more accurate than the shooter behind the trigger, the OP felt he had a genuine reason to post.

He's open to the fact that he may be the issue and not the rifle (which is the case most times). Most cases, a poster refuses to believe he's what's wrong and wants to fix everything else.

Very interesting day today with the Bergara.

Rifle was setup with an Atlas bipod up front, and a bag in the rear at 100 yards.

Spent 3 rounds getting the rifle zero'd since the OP had switched from his 1-piece mount to a pair of Nightforce rings.

Tried a variety of ammo including; FGMM 175gr factory ammo, my own handloads with 42gr of RL15, 175gr SMK, Federal brass, Federal 210 match primers, loaded to 2.80" COAL, and OP's own handloads.

The rifle, whether I shot it or the OP, was consistent at 1.5 MOA. Didn't matter if there were 10 minutes between strings or not, as the barrel never warmed up (very cold outside).

Jumping back to my rifle, I shot several .5 MOA groups and smaller back to back so I know it wasn't me. Even let the OP shoot my rifle to ensure he was doing everything right and sure enough he also shot .5 MOA with my own rifle.

Thought occurred, and the brake was removed.

Even though there was more felt recoil, the rifle's groups narrowed down to 1 MOA consistently whether I shot it or the OP. This included my factory ammo as well as the OP's handloads.

I'm thinking maybe some different ammo might do the trick. All in all, a fun day today.

An awesome awesome experience with Kwikvette@, really appreciate for the all help!

Still not sure why the muzzle brake affected the grouping, but removing it did the magic. The group was much consistent after the brake was removed.

BTW, Kwikvette@'s custom build remington 700 with A5 stock is a beast, and have to say I am jealous of him, lol

Maybe you could also try clocking it at different angles.

I most shoot brakes, but have had two very similar instances, both were factory barrels, both the Bore was off center.

One was kissing the brake so slightly it made noticeable symptoms other than group size. I finally figured it out when a gunsmith told me to use a bright light and look steaks with copper solvent on a Q-tip. Spin it off opened up the Bore all was better.

The other was spun in so tight it appeared to have distorted the end of the barrel. Cut and recrowned..

Not sure if the second issue is similar to yours

Thanks for the info. How did you diagnosed the distorted barrel end? Is it sth i can check by myself or have to do by a gunsmith.

Ding Ding Ding Diver hit this one out of the park.
Take the brake and flush it with ammonia then quickly lay it on some plain white paper towels and post a picture of the paper towels after the ammonia has dried. My guess is the paper towels will look green/blue in color.

Any time you add weight to the muzzle the rifle should group smaller even on a lightweight muzzlebrake so something is amiss.
