I went through this same decision a while back looking for a budget bolt rifle. I was looking at the Ruger American, Savage Axis, and Remington 783. I ended up choosing the Remington and have been very happy with it. When looking at the three of them side by side, the Remington just seemed to be a little more solid to me. The real deciding factor ended up being the rebate that Remington had going. I ended up buying two 783's (308 and 223) and paid around $280 each. They both are much more accurate than I am, but I'm learning.

Remington 783 Review
Whatever you decide, enjoy the rifle!
