Rem 700 Six Five Questions and Help (learn me something)

Barrel length has nothing to do with accuracy, it's muzzle velocity. Every inch is about 50fps variance. If your gun shoots sub MOA at 100 yards then you have issues at 500 to 1000, it's shooting fundamentals, wind, ammo you're shooting, etc.
Are you reloading? If it's factory ammo, what's the SD and ES numbers?
Most likely wind and point of Aim differences at 500-1000. I would bet it's not the rifle. It's what I mentioned above. This is just quickly touching on what could be happening.
My wife thinks I only have 3 guns -
Barrel length adds velocity and velocity lessons the affects of atmospheric conditions.
Extreme Spread tells you what your vertical stringing WILL be and Standard Deviation tells you what it SHOULD be if you shoot enough groups.
If your gun has a factory barrel now adding a custom barrel will drastically shrink your groups.
Truing your action allows the gunsmith to get the barrel on straighter but the affects on your groups size is not dramatic.
At 1000 yards your technique matters more and I hate it when posters talk about gun handling.
At the longer distances your biggest enemy is that the conditions will change and your groups will open up. You can shoot quicker to get all your rounds off in like conditions but if you do that in a sloppy fashion it won't help. Keep your head down and look through the scope as you cycle the bolt. Reloading will also drastically improve your 500-1000 yard groups but only if you do it correctly.Lynn Dragoman, Jr.

Man, you must have got the luck of the draw with that rifle. Help us understand what you included in that build, or perhaps explain what What you mean by "built"?New to bolts guns and recently finished a simple build on a 700 6.5 w/22” Barrel. Purchased an SPS and started from there, not knowing much if anything about long range guns (I’m a Skeet shooter...).
So I’ve noticed at 100 the holes Touch, at 500 it starts to lose the sub MOA tightness and can get sloppy at times, and at 1000 it’s barely MOA.
Is this a function of having a 22” vs 24” Barrel?
Should I be looking at a new barrel?
Should I consider blue printing?
Are there any repetuble SoCal shops that can print and rebarrel?
My goal really is just to tighten the 500-1000 yd groupings.
Thanks in advance.
What position are you shooting from? standing offhand, sitting, prone, bipod?
What optic are you using?
Are you shooting Factory ammo, if so which brand, what bullet weight. Or if you are hand loading, what components are you using?
What is your expectation above and beyond shooting one hole groups, as you state, at 100 yards, and holding MOA at 500?
You say that your goal is to tighten up the 500 to 1K groups, what is your expectation at those distances, 1/2 MOA at 600 with consistency?
Anyhow, very impressive indeed.Last edited by bridgeport; 11-18-2017, 6:45 AM.Comment

Operable phrase here....."might not be doing so."+2
Other than the “accomplished” BR and F-class guys, it seems guys routinely shooting (saying) 1/2 minute 500 and 1000+ plus round groups as routine, might not really be doing so. Honestly, I don’t think even on a no wind day, we are not seeing a lot of 200-20X even in F-class.

In my experience, there is a lot of that going on. I find it curious to watch guys shoot high dollar custom builds at short range (100 yards) and do so with 3 or 5 shot groups, lots of them, maybe 15 or 20 groups, then point at the one or two that are sub MOA, while ignoring the 18 groups that are 1.5 MOA. I would say the same about mid range distance (600 yards) but I see so few guys actually practicing for groups on paper (lots of plate ringing) at 600 that it would be difficult to find an example, other than match shooters or very serious marksman who are practicing honing their skills for an upcoming match. At 1000 yards, I can count on one hand the guys who are truly shooting (or practicing) for record. And then there are the "oh that was just a sighter" mid string. so yea, might not be doing so is pretty much my default expectation, and I'm talking minimum 10 shot strings with 20 shot strings being the standard, at least in F-class and HP.Last edited by bridgeport; 11-18-2017, 10:13 AM.Comment

If your local range has a time of day when the wind switches, fire a shot at the same target during different wind directions. You can see it at 100 and it will really show up at farther ranges. If I could do it all over, I would have taken a wind reading class when I first got interested in shooting; I would be thousands of dollars ahead right now.
If your gun is barely holding moa at 1k, the biggest improvement you will find is in reading wind/mirage. You can tame your vertical by reloading, bags, technique or whatever but the wind will always be your biggest nemesis.Comment

As for build, it was more of a “I just want to try it” type thing.
Parts list:
-Rem 700 SPS 6.5 22” on sale from Turners
-Stockys LRC loaded and bedded with Core 110 epoxy from head to toe with a few deep water jigs installed along with 1/4” allthread tapped to the front of the receiver bed and ran to tip of forend, all in epoxy as well.
-PTG complete firing pin assembly
-Timney Trigger
-Harris 6-9
-Seekins 20 MOA rail
-Seekins Rings
-Vortex PST Gen II 5-25 MRAD
-JP reducer/break
-Kydex cheek riser
Weighs in at 16.8 lbs. I don’t hunt. My Krieghoff clay gun weighs 11lbs and I’ll shoot 8-12 rounds in one session. I really like a heavy gun.
Ammo:
4 brand/types that seem to favor this gun. As follows in order:
1. Prime 130 Match
2. Atomic 142
3. Federal Gold 130 Bergers
4. American Eagle 140
Have tried almost everything I could get my hands on, and Prime was probably the most consistent for me.
90% of what I have shot to date was sitting at a table with the bipod and rear bag. The balance was prone.
Gun has 300 rounds on the odometer.
I guess my goal would be holding a solid MOA at 1000. I don’t plan on doing any events, just like the satisfaction.
Can someone explain why my photos load upside-down? I’d like to share pics of the rifle and how it patterns at 100 and 550.Last edited by Shootin25; 11-18-2017, 3:35 PM.Comment
