270 lacks good bullets for 1000yd use.
The 6mm 105gr bullets are some of the best 1000yd bullets there are without going to a 338.
The 7-08 is going to need 160+ gr bullets and will recoil a good bit more than the 243.
7-08 will have more drop and more wind drift than the 243.

If you have an AR-15, get a bolt and a .224 Valkyrie barrel.

        OP
Sorry to read about your elbow.
The 6.5X284 shoots a 140-147 class bullet with 54-57 grains of powder very accurately to 1000 yards.
The 243 shoots 95-115 grain bullets with 40-48 grains of powder accurately to 1000 yards.
The 6BR shoots 95-108 grain bullets with 30 grains of powder very accurately to 1000 yards.
Savage makes a 6BR or you can buy a Savage barrel in 6BR and add it to a 6.5X284 without changing out the boltface.
You didn't say which elbow got damaged but you can go to Sinclair International and buy an elbow bag.
That bag is about 1.5 inches thick and almost square so you don't have to rest your elbow on a concrete bench top while shooting.
Trust me you will like it under your elbow.

Dominant elbow of course :<( lol thanks appreciate that tip didn't think about that. Kinda got a bug up my a** to buy something since Workman's comp got me sitting around the house doing nothing. Black Friday should have some decent deals guess I'll wait till then.

Not really wanting to get something that I' am gonna have to change out the barrel and receiver can you guys explain how the creedmores and other 6.5's damage the weapon?

Probably should have picked a proper caliber before the rifle.

Not looking at the 6.5's anymore due to the wear on the barrel and receiver I don't think. Think a 243 or 270 would make it to 1,000 yards and still be consistent was thinking 7mm-08 honestly and around black Friday I should be able to get something nice like a good 700 or a Bergara. Yes also been making sure to be looking at min 22 inch lengths and heavy barrels.

Not sure what you mean by "damage the weapon" but assuming you mean barrel wear. Its not really something yoj need to worry about. Its mostly internet hype. Match shooters change out barrels a lot sooner than your average shooter. Even with a 243 you will still have to spend at least $2k in ammo before a factory barrel starts to show signs of throat wear. If you just want to shoot steel or paper at the range then your barrel will last a long long time. If its really a concern for you get a 223. You can get 5k rounds out of a 223 throat.

                      OP
You don't change out the receiver at all. On Savage rifles they come with a floating boltface which allows you to swap them out when swapping out barrels if you need to.
                      In your example the 6.5X284 uses the same boltface as a 6BR a 6Dasher a 243 a 257 Roberts a 270 a 6 Creedmoor a 284 a 308 a 25-06 a 30-06 and a very very long list of other chamberings.
A 6.5X284 uses what alot of shooters call a standard boltface of 0.473 inches meaning you would use that boltface with all the cartridges I already listed.

Now let's say you bought the 6.5X284 and decided you would rather have a 223 or a 300 aac blackout instead. Those chamberings use a small boltface or 0.378 so you would have to buy a second boltface at roughly $35 then the barrel of your choice.

Likewise if you wanted something big you could always buy a Magnum or 0.532 boltface for another $35 and turn your 6.5X284 into a 300 Winchester Magnum a 300 Weatherby a 7mm Remington Magnum or a very long list of Magnum sized cartridges.
The beauty of owning a Savage is for $70 in different boltface your one rifle can be converted into 100's of different chamberings while your sitting at the range if you have enough money for all those barrels.

You can do the same thing with a Remington but as the bolt body doesn't disassemble easily you would need to buy two spare bolts running you $400+ dollars.
SwitchBarrel is a National Champion Shooter and is building his daughter a Savage so he must think they are good to go as he has plenty of custom actions he could use instead.
The major downside with custom actions if your not 100% positive on the chamberings is most custom manufacturers get $700+ for a spare bolt which is 20 times the cost of a new Savage boltface.

Is Savage using 8" twist in 243? I thought they both used 9.25" twist in 243.

Hardly any mass production .243's have the proper twist for long bullets other than the Ruger Precision. So then you start thinking about other calibers because you'd have to buy a barrel anyway. And if you're sticking with Savage, more of their models are available in 6mm Creedmoor, and you don't even need another barrel.

They have the same problem as most other factory barrels.

Ruger uses a 1:8 twist on their heavy barrel 243's like the RPR and Predator.

Will the 243 cleanout a 6mm Creedmoor chamber without setting barrel back?

The creedmoor shoulder is larger but shorter than the 243's shoulder.
You would end up with a 2nd shoulder about 1/4" below your 243's shoulder.
