Thinking of getting cheap Savage thoughts

    Hey All,

Well I usually shoot AR's and Pistols but I shattered my dominant elbow into 14 pieces:<(. Thinking of getting into some bench shooting as that shouldn't be affected by the elbow as I can get to the stock ok.

I have the chance to get a Savage long range hunter in 6.5 x 284 for 499 including rebate. Just looking to punch paper and some steel would like to try and stretch it's legs out to 800+ yards.

    Thoughts?

I’m all for inexpensive Savage guns, but a (cool) caliber like that is going to make up for whatever you saved in a short amount of time. I mean, a .308 will reach out to 800 meters, and not kick your wallet or arm so much.

        meh

It's a sale they don't offer it in any other caliber. Sportsman's warehouse has em going for 799 after rebate that's 300 bucks lol. As for the Ammo price not really concerned about that. Was thinking of a bergara B-14 HMR but hell half the price of the gun for a plinker seems like a no brainer.

Yeah, that caliber is for really long range. A 6.5 Creedmoor is good for 1000+ and it's getting popular enough to make the ammo almost affordable.

Well if you don’t mind feeding it, invest in some glass and rip up that 1000 yard gong!

To make diver's point above, the cheapest 6.5x284 Norma ammo I've found is over $2 a round. There's 6.5 Creedmoor for under 80 cents a round.

Meh... Maybe I should wait for a regular Creedmoor or look at a different rifle :<(. Still 499 pretty good price.

The Creedmoor that I linked is 50 bucks more. The ammo is 1.20 per shot cheaper than what you asked about. Do the math to find the break even point.

                      (Hint: 2 boxes of ammo)

The barrel is going to be toast in 1700 rounds anyways so it’s not like he is stuck with the cartridge very long.

Not that I have anything against the 6.5-284, but it’s no beginnners cartridge.
I chambered a Bartlein barrel for 6.5x284 yesterday and put it on a 700 action for a customer, but this was a simple rebarrel and the guy already had a custom barrel on the gun before the one I put on...

I don't recommend a 6.5 x 284 (Norma) for your purpose. I purchased a Cooper Phoenix on a Model 22 single shot action, as a long range varmint rifle. While my elbows are more or less intact, except for cubital tunnel syndrome, my cervical spine has been disrupted by spinal cord surgery. The Cooper just simply recoiled too hard to shoot in my usual relaxed manner from a bench, which is no problem with other specific varmint calibers. I sent it to Mag-na-Port to have a varmint style muzzle brake installed, which made it much more tractable. Still, it sits in the safe in favor of other rifles in lighter calibers from .204 Ruger, and .223 Remington, to .22-250 Remington, and the larger 6mm PPC and 6mm BR Norma. In my case, the 6.5 x 284 was a poor choice.

That particular cartridge is interesting, and accurate with the right handload recipe, but brass is expensive, bullets more so here where hunting requires lead free, each load requires a goodly load of powder, and factory ammo is outrageously expensive. I did manage to lay in a supply of .284 Winchester brass that forms easily into the 6.5 x 284 case, and saves money over the premium Lapua and Nosler brands. And as ar15barrels points out, it's going to toast a barrel in short order. I don't believe it will be the ideal solution for what you want to do. If economy is the goal, a rifle in .223 Remington/5.56 NATO may be a better choice, even if expectations at 800 yards falls a bit short.
