    Advice on Sharps rifle

Good friend of mine has a hankering for a Sharps style rifle chambered in 45-70.

I'm his "gun guy" friend and while I am knowledgeable about many guns, not so much on the Sharps style single shot rifles.

I own a very nice Uberti lever action and know they make them

He wants something with figured and beautiful grain and perhaps some checkering.

His budget is around $2000 and he is dead set on it being chambered in 45-70.

Any advice on what to look for and where?

    nothing wrong with 45/70.

If he wants one now, and to 100% stick to his budget, pedersoli sharps are probably the way to go. I don't know anything about Uberti's Sharps, but given the reputation of their other products it's probably a safe choice. But I do know that Pedersoli has a very good reputation.

Another option is the Shiloh offerings. while they do exceed his budget, they have several rifles that do not exceed it that much and given you will wait anywhere from 6 months to 2 years depending on their current order volume, there is plenty of time to save up for the difference. Shiloh is about as good as you can get and is the yard stick by all others are measured.

BUT if your friend wants one now and within budget, in my opinion Pedersoli is the way to go and Cabela's is probably going to be the best price.

Get whichever one can handle the highest chamber pressure, or is rated to handle Buffalo Bore ammo. Ooowee!

If really interested I have three Pedersoli 1874 sharps for sale.
I cannot shoot heavy 45-70 calibers due too shoulder injurys.

One is heavy barrel target model 30" pistol grip , other is long range 32" barrel straight stock.

Both have bedded stocks, tuned locks, long range sights, and 11priced much less then retail for rifles only.

          Email for pics. Frank A.

You may want to look for a used Shiloh Sharps.

1was given a Sharps Shiloh rifle back in the late 80s as bonus for a job I had completed. It was a surprise bonus. The workmanship is drop dead gorgeous. Every detail on this rifle is unsurpassed. The person, who gave it to me, pulled some strings and ordered it special from Shiloh with a short turn around time. Must have cost him a fortune. I would have changed nothing other than chambering it for 45-110. Mine 45-70. My rifle is a safe queen. It is just too beautiful to utilize regularly. It came in a custom engraved Mahogany box. The rifle would be mounted on the wall of my man cave if I didn’t live in Kalifornia. I don’t know of Shiloh’s current builds but if they are even 50% as well manufactured as mine – I wouldn’t care about a few more $$$$, I would buy one and forget the rest.

This one fits the budget and is really well built.

My friend has one. I've shot it a few times and really liked it. His has upgraded aftermarket sights.

I have always liked this style of rifle. But I find the "other" cartridges/calibers interesting.

I had a Shiloh Sharps and traded it off (45-110). I then got to shoot it months later at metallic silhouettes (rams) at 500 meters. Two for two. Then I had to get another. I got a Pedersoli in 45-70.

Not sure how true this is but I read Pedersoli had a better barrel because they used modern methods to cut the rifling. Shiloh Sharps used the old school traditional method. The Pedersoli is cheaper and I'm pleased with it. The quality on both are very good.

1874 Pedersoli's Sharps are great rifles. Check out GunBroker, they always have plenty in your friends budget range. You may have to be patient on finding one with really nice wood...

The rifles 6mmintl is selling are better quality than the Chiappa.
