Chassis worth it?

I just got my r700 5r. I paid about 700 for it. I mainly use it to shoot paper but would like to stretch it out once I find a location in the Bay Area.

I've been thinking of a chassis for already comfortable position.

Cheap is 400-500 up to 1000

Is it worth it?

What are some recommendations?

im on the other side of the fence...i dont like chassis...ive shot a couple and end up going back to a stock.
my suggestion...talk to a few guys here shooting both and im sure you could find a couple that would let you get behind both.

Chassis are cool because of the modularity, but are not as accurate of a platform as a stock with a proper glass bedding job.

Even with my AI and JAE chassis, I skim bedded them and saw a very good increase in precision.

Are they better than a factory Remington stock; YES. Are they better than a properly bedded McMillan; NO.

I bet that even a cheap B&C Medalist stock will a good bedding job will beat a chassis in your price range and come out way cheaper.

For paper I would use a stock and for long-range it would depend on how you are shooting long-range.
If you can use a bench or shoot F-Class style a stock is better.
If your shooting Precision Rifle see what the top 20 shooters are using and stick with that.

I was trying to follow your directions on how to get there and got to where the dirt road ends and becomes another dirt road. Didn't see a turn off. I'm afraid to go up and can't find the group.

The road turns to dirt as soon as you turn off of Pitney.
Once it becomes dirt it stays dirt the whole way.
When you reach the top of the mountain the road forks west and east or left and right.
You stay to the left or head west away from the Highglade Lookout.
I believe the road sign calls is deer valley french glade road.
You stay on it approximately 3 miles and you will see the vehicles.

It's a perfectly functional composite stock with an aluminum chassis built into it.
It floats the barrel as well as any other stock or chassis system.
It's as stiff as you need for any type of positional or prone shooting.
It's not sexy though.
It just looks like a hunting stock.

People primarily want chassis systems to get a detachable magazine and an adjustable cheek piece.

I had one in a Mag. even with custom barrels and hand loads I really wasn't getting much below 1/2". I noticed the bottom of the action had shinny spots that appeared to be the action moving in the aluminum block. FWIW, the stock was torqued and recoil lug against the chassis stop.

I actually like the stock for hunting; so I had Chad Dixon re-cut the mini-chassis section (similar to bedding, but removing material) and ended up with a ragged hole shooter. So while antidotal, I am not sure they have the same quality control as some of the other systems out there.

I mainly shoot paper no matches yet so I just load one at a time. I would like a chassis for a folding stock or a removable stock. It doesn't fit into my bag right now with the bipod attached. Too long for a range bag and I put it in a shotgun bag
