A well set up set of irons is nice to shoot.

For that rifle I would keep options for irons and scope. However, I wold use a receiver mount sight for a longer sight radius.

that said my younger eyes like irons best. These dang progressive bifocals do not make good shooting glasses. I need to look at some dedicated shooting glasses...

Remove the sights both will interfere with the scope unless you install super high rings and then it will hard to get in line with the scope. The sights come off with two screws. The myth with irons is the same as a 30-06 is all anyone ever needs.

If you don't want iron sights then I recommend selling the rifle to someone who will value it because it has iron sights. Then take the money and buy a rifle intended for a scope.

About three years ago I couldn't find locally a bolt action hunting rifle with iron sights so I had to order one from out of state. When my FFL saw it he commented that guys often come in asking for the this type of rifle.

There a times when a scope or any optic is a hindrance. If you're elk hunting in thick bush, open sights are excellent, don't fail, don't fog up, rain doesn't affect the, and don't use batteries.

You won't see a professional hunter going after Africa big game with red dot sight!

I had a moose hunting experience which changed my mind about scopes and optics.

Smitty, you and I are on the same page.
The OP could do very well with QD rings, and a reasonably sized optic won't interfere in any way with the factory iron sights.
My first BDL .30-06 came with iron sights and a sling, two features that help to make it an excellent hunting rifle.
Now that I'm heavily involved with various "Scout" rifles, and practice actually removing the optic and using the irons, my ability to make decent hits has only increased.

However, if the O.P. is still bent on removing the iron sights I'd be in line to buy the take-offs. I need a set for my custom '06
