Remington 700 sts 5r-updated

Just put a remington 700 stainless 5r in .308 in jail today at turners on their sale.
My first bolt rifle. Ordered a leupold mark 4 sight rail for it and plan to put a vortex viper hs-t 6x24x50 on it.
Seems that the stock it comes with is highly regarded but trigger is not.
Planning on putting together some 175gr rounds together for it. I dont have varget, which seems to be the suggested powder. How does 4064 or 4895 work?
Anything else i need to know.
Looking to shoot steel at angeles past 600. I do it with my r-25 with a 3x9 so i figure i should really be able to do so now.

I've had one of those for a few years, and when I saw Turner's ad I almost bought another, just because it is such a great deal!

I put a Karsten cheek rest on mine, because I couldn't get a consistent cheek weld any other way. I replaced the trigger with the Timney (510, maybe? With the flat shoe?).

I am using IMR 4064 and getting a hair under 0.5 MOA, with ancient eyes and shaky hands. I also cooked up some "youth loads" with H4895 and 155 grain SMK's for helping out new shooters. Easy to load for, although the throat on mine is pretty long. The SMK's seem tolerant though, so I have stuck with them.

Definitely more accurate than I am!

IMR 4064 works great for 168-175gr bullets. It's given me the same level of accuracy as Varget, but at a bit higher velocity. Plus, it meters better with a bit bigger sticks. However, I have heard others that report less success. If you have 4064, give it a try. If not, Varget is again widely available as that seems to be the most popular choice.

Yes, your rifle should be good to go, but I'd replace the trigger and suggest a tame muzzle brake

Im pretty sure a timney trigger is in the future but glass first. No threads on muzzle on this one so i will see how it shoots before i hit up randall. Good to hear about 4064. I will have to look at recipes.

A Jewell trigger is my choice, I have one in every REM700 I own. Varget, 4895 and 4064 are all in the correct burning rate for the 308 with heavy bullets.

IMR4064 should work fine, as would RL15. My son bought a Rem 5r a couple years ago, it is a fine shooter. We replaced the trigger with a Timney. I've got a Savage Pre Carb. I worked up loads for mine trying both 4064 and Varget, using 168 and 175 SMK's and Hornady 178 Match. All shot well so I went with the Varget and Hornady's for their better BC's. My son uses the same in his rifle and has shot many sub MOA 5 shot groups. Congrats on your new rifle, look forward to a range report.

I just finished turning an ADL .223 Varmint into a BDL with drop box magazine and Timney 510, it shoots like a dream now. Can't wait to drop a 510 into this too, fun days ahead for sure.

I also use 4064 with the 178 AMax bullets. Works just fine. Cant wait till the end of June when Randall gets ahold of my rifle.

I use r-15 in my 168gr lr118 wannabe rounds. Will look at it for the hornady 178s( i have 2 boxes of them i have been looking for a use for) the bc on those 178s is amazing.
