AR's are cool, but not always what you want. I have a Browning X-Bolt .223 (1:8) with a Leupold VX3i 3x9x40 and really like it! Bought this after shooting my BIL's Weatherby Vanguard in .223.

For a bolt gun in .223 and not going too cheap, I'd look for something more in the middle ~ high.

    For about the same $.

    Weatherby Vanguard (1:9)

    Ruger American Predator. (1:8)

Ruger American with a Vortex scope combo. (1:9)

I have a ar that's is pretty darn accurate. But it's an ar and not a bolt gun.

Want to get the entire feel of loading and unloading the round and everything.

I did learn from this thread that it seems a heavy barrel is what I want to shoot paper vs hunting. I never thought of it

I thought about this but for a few bucks more you can get an axis 2 with accutrigger which I hear is good

You really want something with a heavy barrel...

The axis is really similar in quality, fit, and finish to the Ruger Predator, which has a heavy barrel and comes with a scope rail.

Its a better place to be, but a R700 SPS Tactical or a heavy barrel Howa is a much better place to be.

Ruger predator says heavier tapered barrel. How much heavier? Hard to tell from specs but 6.2 vs 6.5

All these factory rifles are going to have a taper. It's not until you get into custom stuff you get to buy a straight taper truck axle.

At this level... all you need to know is if it says heavy, you want it.

The Remington Model 783 is the next generation of precision performance rifles engineered from more than 50 years of experience as the dominant force in bolt action techn

The Savage Model 11 Hog Hunter bolt action rifle is chambered in .223 Remington and is designed to eliminate hogs and other vermin. To achieve this Savage has employed a

I can dig that but I have 2 bolt 223s and I just don't shoot them much. The 223 is not much more than a plinker if it has a slow twist rate. If you want a good bolt gun how about a 243, that will do everything, is a blast to shoot and can reach out a fair distance?

Edit: a Ruger Scout in 223 is kinda interesting and the barrel has some beef to it.

The only budget bolt guns I would ever consider:

                      Rem 700 SPS
                      Tikka T3
                      Winchester XPR
                      Mossberg MVP

The Remington and Tikka will hold their resale value as well.

if you just want to get our feet wet with a bolt gun, only plan to punch paper, won't be shooting over 500 yards...

Nothing wrong with a 223. think of it as an adult 22 rifle for plinking and having fun.

my 2 cents for what it's worth... give it a little more thought before you go out and buy something. what exactly do you see your self doing with a bolt gun. then try and match that.

if just plinking and having fun, and you reload, a 223 is a good way to go. if you want to reach out a little more, 308 or 6.5 might a better choice.

I have a Savage single shot heavy barrel bolt gun in 223. It is the best shooter I have. Always a tack driver. Love that rifle. Bruce

Howa mini action in .223 with 20" medium barrel works great. With detachable 10 round mag and 9. Twist. About 6.5 lbs with scope. Tack driver with Blackhills or handloads...cheap too

Keep in mind this is only to get the feet wet. Once if I like this type of shooting I won't have a problem with spending more. Can't run before you walk right?
