Yup you bet. Also play with Vortex's LRBC on their site. You can even select your scope and it will give you a hold over chart for the BDC.Comment

The NRA definitions:This weekend a few buddies and I are headed to the desert for a little equipment testing and plinking. This got us thinking on where to start?
Traditionally we always sit a steel plate at 100 and 200 with random targets between. Any suggestions on short, mid and long placement, with the mid being a likely zero? Google says 546 (550) what say you?
200yds and less is short range
200-600yds is mid range
Beyond 600yds is long range
Beyond 1200yds is commonly referred to as extended long range.Randall Rausch

I have a range finder that is rough out to about 600.
Thinking we will set at 100 (Zero), 300 and 600. This will give us a good stage. Next trip will be 100 (confirm zero) 600 and 1000 then I will come back and get kudos from some, cr** talk from others ha!Comment

Just use the range finder and leap-frog it out there. Set up at 100, 200, 400 then stand at the 400 and set your next line at 600, 800, 1000. it's not the distance that will get you, it's the ability to correctly call and adjust for the wind. Good luck and have fun.Comment

Hell 100 yards feels like long range when you first start.
Keep stretching out, keep it a challenge.

With the current equipment available 1200 yards is not even long range for people with 35mm tube $3K scopes sitting on 40moa base and firing 338 Lap Improved or 408 CheyTac. For me long range depends on the equipment. I've shot my hunting rifle in 270 Win out to 1K yards and my uncle thought it was impossible using 10x 30mm tube scope. He was amazed how easy it was when all was dialed in and timing the wind read. I put together my Rem 700 in 300 WSM in the hopes of doing 1500-1800 yard shooting. Now I just drool over the peeps equipment in the 2.5K+ yard club. The wise man said just find your place

Extended Long Range = ELR ~ the newer use of "Extreme" seems to go hand in hand with the timing of new interest in ELR and the Di*# waging of people like Hill Country Rifles style of M2 machine gunning, hoping for an impact on large targets with full disregard to how much larger the circular error of probability is than the target: http://hillcountryrifles.com/hcr/new...015-4210-yardsD.I.Y. a Target Cam for ELR

Get a ballistics calculator.I am getting into bolt actions a bit more, and I am loving it.

Rough specs
Mossberg flex 556 standard pmc Bronze 55g
Savage Axis .308 standard pmc Bronze 147g
Ruger American .308 standard pmc Bronze 147g
A speer 55g FMJ BT @ 3200 FPS at the muzzle and a 100 yard zero has a 88.1" drop at 600 yards. at a 25 yard zero the drop is 69.38" @ 600 yards.
A Winchester 147g FMJ MATCH @ 2900 FPS at the muzzle and a 100 yard zero has a 81.01" drop at 600 yards. At a 25 yard zero the drop is 63.86" @ 600 yards.
That's with a LOS angle of 14 degrees. sight height of 1.5". Altitude, wind speed and wind direction will all add to the difference in travel and impact.
You might want to change your ammo for those longer shots. Something with a heavier bullet, 175+ grain with higher muzzle velocities.Comment

Since you guys already do 100 200 yards the next step I would take is go to 300 and work on out. Figure your rifles out as you go.Do not fear the enemy, for your enemy can only take your life. It is far better that you fear the media, for they will steal your Honour

For some days it would be 100 yards for me when I am shooting bad.
Other days much longer.A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

I would set a paper target at 100 to confirm your zero then your steel probably at 300 then 600.
When I first went out to BLM to stretch it out I did the 100 paper, then 300 and 550 steel. When not going for groups the 300 and 500 you will find to be real easy. We then took our steel out to 750, 900 then 1000. The 750 was still pretty easy to hit the steel but after that is when we were getting more misses ok N the steel.Comment
