Savage 99

So I pick her up on Friday evening and we went to the range on Sat. Set up a target at 50 yards. There was no bench rest and every shot was off hand and standing, but was able to place every round on the 6" target. To say I am pleased would be an under statement. She shot where I pointed and I believe she will serve me wonderfully for a long time.
Only downside came after shooting several rounds, the rotary mag jammed up and was not pushing the next round up. Either it just really needs a new cleaning or I am going to need to replace a spring. Goes with the territory of buying used I guess. All in all, great trip to the range.

Hope you can fix her up. Sounds like it was shooting good for awhile.

I would be surprised if it was anything other than just really dirty. I would not be surprised if it had not been cleaned since 1976

If you deep clean, do some research first. I've read that disassembly and reassembly of the rotary mag can be tricky. I've never disassembled mine that far...

I am only going to remove the wood and spray out. If that does not correct the issue, it will be going in to the smith.

Nice rifle, the 22 high power, 250-3000 or the 284 and the 358 are the ones to keep an eye out for.

Be careful removing the stock. 99's are well known for getting cracks at the wrist from people trying to remove the stock.

if you are removing the stock, its pretty easy to remove the lever, trigger and sear so you can remove the breech bolt

Thank You. I spoke to the LGS I purchased from and they have a 30 day warranty on used firearms. I am going to take it in to them tonight and not risk doing anything to it yet. Especially since I would need to get a good set of screw drivers for it first.

Heard back from the Gunsmith. He was not able to replicate the issue and stated that it functioned fine for him. Said he would tighten up the tension a bit though. I get to pick back up tonight. Hopefully send some shots down range on Sun

Since it is in .308Win, it can easily handle shots out to 300 yds. Savages are very accurate lever actions. I used to have one, and it would easily shoot just as accurately as many of my bolt guns.

Congratulations on your new rifle. It will probably become your favorite big game rifle.

There isn't any big game species in North America that a Savage Model 99 in .308 Win can't kill. With the right bullet, I'd use it on griz, although I'd prefer a .45/70 Gov't for big bears.

This is just a hunch: a Savage Model 99 in .308 Win will kill big game farther than 90% of hunters can shoot.

And yes, you're right: I'm jealous. Why is it that other hunters find great deals on truly classic big game rifles, and all I can find is sold at large gun stores?

Picked her up yesterday and fired ten rounds. Mag functions again.

And my lgs has at least ten savage 99s currently sitting on their shelves. Multiple caliber choices. Don't seem to get much interest from other potential buyers. There just might be another in my future.

Seems like a fair price if the stock and bore check out. I'd buy it at that price. The Savage 99 was so far ahead of all the other rifles in the 1950's. It's innovative action and unique appearance set it apart even to this day.

The rotary magazine can be "refreshed" by removing the forend, securing the spindle and turning the plug at the front of the receiver. Imparts a bit more compression on the spring. It's a heck of alot more difficult to describe than do.

My 1954 version still worked but was a bit lazy and I have a habit of finding out how things work by fiddling with them. I got about halfway through the instructions before intuition took over. It isn't difficult.
