    Savage 99

Sorry about all the opinion posts, but I'm ready to buy and want to be as sure as I can.

Came across a Savage 99 in 308. Condition looked decent enough (didn't know what to look for yet) and is being sold for $450. I'm planning on using as a fun gun and may hunt hog and possibly deer. Nothing more than 100-200 yards.

Assuming I look it over and in good condition with no cracks and such, is it something I should get? I fell in love holding it. I'm pretty sure it is a later model as I don't think it had the counter on the side, but safety was on the lever.

I have one in .300 Savage, it's very shootable at the ranges you describe. If it's in good condition buy it the price seems in the ball park.

Since it is in .308Win, it can easily handle shots out to 300 yds. Savages are very accurate lever actions. I used to have one, and it would easily shoot just as accurately as many of my bolt guns.

I finally goy my taxes in today, so I may just be putting that puppy in jail tonight. It seems to be an overwhelmingly liked piece from what I have been able to find online.

They are good guns. I have a 300 savage as well and very accurate. I hunt deer with it. Just check the stock for cracks. They are known to crack near the tang. Mine had a small crack. Fixed it and shoots great still

Savage 99 is an excellent rifle. Well balanced, nice to carry.
Only been pig hunting once; my 99 in 300 Savage worked perfect.

I like the Savage 99 over Winchester/Marlin 94 any day, at least for rifle cartridges.

FYI, the 300 Savage is the base cartridge for the 308Win.

At $450, buy it if the bore is good and the action smooth.

I have one in .308 and it shoots nice. Handles very well.

Action was smooth and trigger felt crisp. I'm going to be looking for cracks and the bore. I'm still nervous about it being used, and not getting to test fire it.

I wouldn't be too nervous. I can't imagine it was used much, most weren't. Like someone else said, I would also check the bore

Just purchased and jailed. It's a 99e, not sure on year, that marking has rubbed off. It is after 1960 as it does not have the brass counter, and has aluminum internal rotary Mag. Got it down to $424 though

Congratulations. A 99 in 250-3000 is on my bucket list.

You might want to ask the store if you can cycle a few of their "snap caps" through it. But if the gun looks good on the outside, functions well, safety works fine, etc then you're probably fine. The Numrich Arms schematics are a great tutorial on how things work. This is the detach mag version, if yours is different model I'm sure they have a schematic on it.

I prefer the older versions and reload so 300 Savage, 250-3000 are fine for me. A 308 probably makes sense as a useful and practical rifle and I'm sure is drilled & tapped for a scope.
