Considering Marlin 1895CB

Can anybody speak to the quality and accuracy of the new 1895 Marlin in 45-70? And can I put a tang sight on it?

I only own pre 2007 Marlins but have heard mixed reviews about the newer Remington made Marlins, mostly negative. As far as a tang sight, the bolt will hit it unless you mount it very rear ward but then it will be too close to your face. Most people go with skinner sights. Look for a jm stamped Marlin cowboy and you'll be good to go. Browning also makes a very nice 1886 in 45/70

Yes, I've read that before. But this is 2017, and I understand that the Marlin rifles have improved since then. What I need to know is: how much have they improved?

Great read. Same reason I've never wanted a remington with their many years of poor manufacturing or making things right. Still there's something about an old Marlin so, hopefully they continue to improve

I like the higher capacity rifle. Maybe skinner sights are the way to go. This is a target rifle only. I don't hunt.

I have not but I own a browning 1886 and 2 Winchester takedown 1886 these are made in Japan miroku and are extremely well made. The marlin cb is a lot lighter than the 1886.

I actually purchased an 1895CB with an 18.5" barrel, just a few weeks ago. I can't tell you whether or not the tang sight will work; I plan on going with a Skinner peep sight; specifically, "The Alaskan".

As for the quality, it's a pretty nice gun. The lines where the walnut components meet metal are all nice and tight. The action is smooth, and it seems to be reasonably accurate (though I've only put 10 rounds through it at about 25 yards). And I do like that it's a side-loader.

Admittedly, I don't have any experience with JM stamped Marlins, so I can't make any comparisons there.

Honestly, this is my first lever action, so I'm not very experienced with, or knowledgeable about them. Bottom line though, I'm thoroughly happy with it.

Do they have a tang safety?

Only one of my Winchester has the tang safety and rebounding hammer. The other one was sent to turnbull and he worked his magic on it.



And it's a 16" takedown
