243 for Target shooting

As with alot of people with the regulations on ARs and the questionable future i am looking into spending more energy on bolt actions.

I'm working on my skillset at 300+ yards. The creedmoor seems to be the current fan favorite. But Remington doesn't even make one and for some reason i just can't get behind savages. Remington has a 243 with i think a 1:9 twist. Maybe get a varmint in that and get my 2500 rounds out of it and go from there. Maybe rebarrel to an ackley or something who knows. I don't know how far I'll take this but I'd like to not have to switch calibers in the near future. I do reload and everything.

Can 243 hang? Or do I go 6.5 and look into other routes?

if you want a 6mm and don't like the 243 you can always try the 6mm creedmoor.

I chose 243 because Lapua brass is cheap and even 6.5mm bullets are a step up in price. That translates to very cheap to burn out a barrel. Cost per shot is dominated by bullet when your bullet is boutique, and that's what you are looking at for long range. 6mm by far is the sweet spot between ballistics and cost.

OP..I've been thinking along the same lines recently.......

No 6.5 CM from the Remington 700 action.......a $600 Rifle that can be made awesome with a Timney trigger......)

Yeah, it's a 25-06. (30-06 case necked down) not a wildcat but available ammo.

This guy wanted something accurate out to 800 yards and he got what he wanted. It does have pricey scope, but that comes with the territory. It's not unusual for a long range scope to cost more than the Rifle.

243 is an excellent precision rifle cartridge.
The Remington 26" 1:9 twist barrels will usually shoot the 105 Hornady Vmax and the 107gr Sierra Matchkings.
Other longer bullets like the 105 Bergers or 115 Dtacs usually won't work though until you rebarrel into a barrel with a faster twist.

No one likes the plain old 6mm Remington? I have a Remington VLS model in an HS stock, works fine and aftermarket bottom metal for the 308 works well in the 6mm Remington.

I like the plain old 6mm Remington but the OP asked about the 243.
The 243 Winchester is a better round imho than the 6.5 Creedmoor because barrel life isn't important to me. Ballistically 243 all the way and once you wear out the throat rechamber the same barrel to 6/284.

I love howa's and i own a couple for hunting. I was thinking about buying the heavy barrel action an dropping it in a B&C and putting a nice optic on it. My main deterrent is rebarreling it seems like a pain. It would take me 4 years to at least to shoot out a barrel so maybe i will go that route and cross the bridge when i get to it.

I just like the idea of remington because as i want i can easily and affordably make changes to it. The howa does continue to come up though it is a really viable option.

It looks like it would be a cool caliber it just seems like the availability of the .243 is kinda the deciding factor. LIke i said though i really know nothing about it.

Really? why do you like it better? I know cheaper, even to reload, and less recoil. Any other insight?
If i go remington barrel life isnt really vital because the ease of gunsmithing/rebarreling. 2500 rounds or whatever is gonna take me a couple years of shooting to be honest. after that I can just drop some money and go full custom or mostly custom.

If you buy a Remington 700 and you shoot out the barrel, you can find take off barrels pretty cheap if you want to replace a shot out barrel with another factory barrel

The Remington short actions are frequently purchased and then rebarelled.

From time to time you see shops selling new take off barrels from all sorts of short Action rifles...

The shop buys 10-20' guns for the actions, trues up the action and installs a custom barrel.

The factory take off is sold for around $150 IIRC

The 243 is a great target cartridge. I had Randall rebarrel a Model 70 and put on a Bartlein 1 in 8 twist. Shoots really nice. Not much recoil. I haven't seen any factory loaded match ammo in 243.
