The Flatline bullets may change that depending on how deep competitor's pockets are. Also the new 200.20X is looking good, so close to the 230 but can go quite a bit faster in the various 30 cal cartridges.
The new 2156 is also nice, and if you are willing to throat specifically for it the Lapua Scener L 155 is pretty slick.weg: That device is obsolete now. They replaced it with wizards.

They are giving up velocity for the better wind drift and the way the target gets processed in the pits.
Once you go hot in Benchrest you have 10 minutes for your 10 shots and the relay is usually over in 2-3 minutes.
If your target is pulled and spotted between shots it takes longer and with 20 round strings it is even longer yet.
You guys are forced to wait between your shots if your Spotter isn't super fast.
Two different styles.Last edited by LynnJr; 10-23-2016, 2:32 PM.Lynn Dragoman, Jr.

C. AvalibilityA. What other 6.5 round is there that's relevant here. Ok Maybe 260. But C'mon 6.5x55 That someone said? Designed in the 1800's? Did they use that in the civil war or something?? I laughed so hard at that, What a joke.
B. I'm not even gonna respond to that.
C. Try um..... just about everything. Tell Ya What. Try to tell me something the 308 is actually better at. Go ahead take your time. I'll wait.
D. Ok whatever. A reloading manuel??
I also second the ruger precision rifle (it's available in 308 or 6.5cm). It's a great platform the has a fast growing aftermarket. It will be a great platform to grow with you, I love mine and it is easily 1/2-3/4 moa with factory ammo. That said my 700 still has a warm place in my heart.

Here's one you could build on https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/...BOLT+308+MATTE Get it a criterion barrel, boyds stock, PTG bottom metal, maybe give it one of those big knob bolt handles.sigpic

1000cc motorcycles are 25% better than 600cc motorcycles.
Should everyone start on a liter bike?
308 is a better TEACHER of shooting in the wind which is probably the most significant thing you need to LEARN in order to reliably hit targets at extended ranges.Randall Rausch

Rickmcu, again please tell me about the last time you competed in and won (or placed, or even showed up to) a nationally sanctioned rifle match. I'll wait.weg: That device is obsolete now. They replaced it with wizards.

Primarily I'm not the one making broad claims that the 308 is outdated and useless, so I'm not the one needing to back up my claim. However, I previously referenced Jim's 2015 State Long Range win with a 308 as proof, at no point has Rickmcu provided any argument as to why the 6.5CM is so vastly superior to the 308 other than making the claim that it is. I agreed that ballistically some 6.5CM loads are superior to all 308 loads, my skepticism comes from the fact that the vast majority of matches shot in this country are won by people who know how to shoot, not by cartridges.
But if you like:
I was 35th individual overall in the National Team Trophy match at Camp Perry in 2016. I was on the team that placed 3rd out of civilians at the National Infantry Team Trophy match, where I dropped two points. I am classified Master with the NRA in XTC. I am by no means the most qualified shooter on this board, but I am plenty qualified to call bull**** on the statement that "[.308 is] an out dated round that's not very good anymore."weg: That device is obsolete now. I'm sure you are very knowledgeable due to the fact you chamber a lot of rifles for people. There are a lot of far more qualified people advocating the 6.5 creedmoor to learn on. There are a lot of reasons that one could argue this logic. The end goal is rounds on target. The 6.5 creedmoor is more likely to hit the target when influenced by wind which equals less frustration. Not to mention less felt recoil. I am a huge .308 fan but, cannot deny that the 6.5 creedmoor is a better target round. People are even using it with great success in hunting. To each their own. I have 6 creedmoor, 6.5 creedmoor, .308 and .338 lapua for my rifle. So I get to have best of all worlds. If I could only have one of those it would be the 6.5 creedmoor without a doubt.

I dont think anyone is debating the FACT that 6.5 creedmoor is ballistically superior to .308win.
What some of us disagree with, is the idea that the .308 is no longer useful or that it is useless simply because it was designed in the 1950's. Yes, there are many newer and better performing rounds. Does that make the .308 dead? No, that is unequivocally absurd. It is one of the most popular and useful rounds of all time. It is still extremely popular and it is still an excellent choice for a first all purpose bolt gun.
Again, I am not debating the FACT that 6.5 Creedmoor is a newer design that has many advantages over the .308win. I am just calling BS on anyone that says it is superior simply because it is newer and saying that the .308 is an obsolete useless round.Last edited by Tere_Hanges; 10-24-2016, 2:47 PM.CRPA and NRA member.

Maybe in PRS or Tactical but not NRA Longrange, Midrange, XTC, or Palma (obviously). It may begin to show up in F-Class because people can get started on it so easily but the 6 Dasher, the 284 derivatives as bsumoba pointed out, or the 300WSM are used when people are competing for score at big national matches (there are obviously other outliers).
You are absolutely right that it's about rounds on target, but expand that point to consider the practical application of shooting. This is one of the reasons the 6.5 excels, but it's one of the reasons the 308 has it beat. You want a new shooter to not have to think about much more than the fundamentals. Not reloading, twist rates, reamers, etc. Just the fundamentals. With RPR in 6.5 and the good factory ammo in 6.5 make it a good first setup, likewise the completely worked out method of building an accurate 308 has been done for you. Savage builds their Palma rifle but any good 30" cut rifled barrel with a 1:12 twist, Palma profile, Palma 95 reamer, Lapua Palma Brass, Sierra Palma Bullets, 47gr of Varget (don't blow up your gun) and the CCI SR Benchrest primer will shoot well. You don't need to do any work, you just build what everyone else has built and it will shoot.Last edited by milotrain; 10-24-2016, 2:52 PM.weg: That device is obsolete now. Listen I AGREE that the .308 is NOT dead!!!!! It is my PRIMARY round. Personally I think F class etc is boring. So I am guilty of not even considering those disciplines. I could care less when the bullet was made. With Flat line bullets you should be able to hit whatever you want.
Again the guy is looking for a bolt .308. If I was buying a new bolt gun it would be a Ruger Precision with a 6.5 creedmoor and find a used .308 barrel.
