There you go again with these old rounds. And I don't know when it was made, maybe sometime a little before the dinasour 308?? I don't know and frankly I don't care. Nobody in prs or compitions shoots 30-06 any more. I would venture to say it even more outdated and less relevant than the 308. Which isn't saying much at all.Comment

A. What other 6.5 round is there that's relevant here. Ok Maybe 260. But C'mon 6.5x55 That someone said? Designed in the 1800's? Did they use that in the civil war or something?? I laughed so hard at that, What a joke.A. You didn't say the 6.5CM, you said a 6.5 round.
B. The 308 is "legal" for many more competitions than the 6.5CM.
C. What exactly is the 6.5CM better for over the 308? It is not "much much better" in a number of circumstances so you need to be specific.
D. Many good shooters have written about how good the 308 is, why should we believe you over all the paperwork written about the 308?
Yes the 6.5CM is a good round, but the 308 is FAR from dead.

B. I'm not even gonna respond to that.
C. Try um..... just about everything. Tell Ya What. Try to tell me something the 308 is actually better at. Go ahead take your time. I'll wait.
D. Ok whatever. A reloading manuel??Comment

No need to bring Manuel in to this, racist.

308 is far better if you want to compete internationally in long range competition for self evident reasons. Because of that most national shooters who wish to make the Palma team shoot 308. In the hands of a good shooter 308 is not far different from 6.5CM, with some loads 6.5CM has a ballistic advantage, not all and not always with enough significance to matter.
The fact that you assume 6.5 means we are talking about 6.5CM makes you an unreliable resource. Your reloading manual comment makes no sense but that's not surprising. Tell me about your last win at a sanctioned rifle match.weg: That device is obsolete now. They replaced it with wizards.

Looking to get a bolt action 308. Need Help!
Do yourself a favor and get on Snipershide or Accurate shooter. Personally I love my Accuracy International AXMC. For your needs I think by far the best bang for the buck entry level rifle is the Ruger Precision Rifle. It has all the features of a custom action at a fraction of the price. It accepts Pmags, AICS, Magpul AICS etc. cheap mags help a ton too. It is also very easy to switch calibers and barrels are very inexpensive. So as you start reloading the rifle can grow with you. Buy a barrel in either caliber you desire. 6.5 Creedmoor is 25% better ballistically speaking. Why not learn with a easier round? I love the .308 and it is my primary round to practice with due to barrel life. More and more aftermarket parts are released everyday. The best part is that you do not have to send it out to a gunsmith. Also people are selling their factory barrels for under 250 dollars! Buy a Ruger and be done!

Buy a Remington 700 Short Action off of gunbroker for $375 with the trigger.
Go to Criterion or McGowen barrels and get what is called a RemAge barrel in the chambering of your choice for $365.
Go with a Boyd's stock if it's for hunting at $125.
If its just for the bench get a used McMillan with a 3 inch wide forend for $300 and your all set.
If it's a dual purpose hunting bench gun get the flat 2.250 forend and your all set.
It will outshoot all the guns posted above except the Accuracy International and will most likely outshoot 95% of the guns on this website.
To the guy with the Ruger that doesn't shoot well the three most important parts of accuracy are the Barrel the Barrel and the Barrel.
If it won't shoot it needs a barrel.
After too many years of shooting competition I would not buy any Remington for more than $500 as all guns deserve a great barrel.
When your new you want to save up your $1000 and buy a ready to go gun but in the end you would be accuracy ahead to buy the pieces and put it together yourself or have a gunsmith do it as the RemAge is a 15 minute job. I don't want to step on anyone's toes so pay your gunsmith for a full hour and BS with him while he does the work.
Your new action from gunbroker won't require you to take off or clean up the action.Last edited by LynnJr; 10-23-2016, 8:43 AM.Lynn Dragoman, Jr.

My friend is going the RemAge route with his SPS. We've already put a jewell trigger into his rifle and will be dropping it into a more stable stock. He decided on 6.5 creedmoor, but is considering making his gun more of a target gun at which point he might go 6 dasher if he goes smaller caliber or 284 Shehane if he goes larger. I think this is the most economical way to go. Get a better than factory barrel on your gun, learn to develop a load, learn to read the wind, and you will be better off than most.
The 308 is not dead, but you definitely have to shoot it with the right components to get even close to the 6mm, 6.5s or 7mm, just talking pure ballistics. In long range precision like F-Class, it comes down to reading the wind. If you are shooting long range benchrest, it comes down to getting all your rounds downrange really fast in the same wind condition. In the hands of a good wind reader, the 308 will keep up with other calibers out to 1K yards, no problem.
The Chou brothers at this years F-Class Canadian Championships tied the F-Open score and the winner in F-Open was shooting a 300 WSM. They practically beat out all the 7mm, 6.5mm and 6 mm calibers. Now, the Chou brothers from what I hear are crazy and they have that particular range figured out. That just goes to show you that on any given day, a good shooting rifle (no matter what caliber) in the hands of a good wind reading shooter will get it done.
It was a family affair in the F-TR Division at the Canadian F-Class Championships this past week. In a remarkable show of strength, Kevin and Will Chou, brothers from Aurora, Canada, finished first and second, topping a strong 94-shooter field that included past American and Cana...
Is this type of event common, maybe not. The F-Open winner will almost always score higher than the 308 shooters and this might be one of the only bigger matches where I have seen a 308 caliber gun scoring this high and matching the F-Open shooters. If you look at scores from say the Berger SWN or F-Class Nationals, the F T/R (308 class) winner will be outshooting MANY F-Open shooters using the higher BC bullets and softer shooting guns. What does that tell you??? I am exlcuding the highpower/palma guys for the time being because they have double the target size (but they are using open/iron sights
). Is it the caliber? NO! It's the shooter. If they can read the wind and know the cartridge, and their gun is shooting great, they will score well, probably better than a normal shooter using the higher BC bullets.
Talking pure accuracy, the 308 is not dead. If you talk about gun handling, the 308 is tougher to shoot than the 6-7mm cartridges generally. If you talk about ballistics, the 6-7mm in the heavier grain bullets have more wind bucking capabilities and give you a larger margin for error in your wind reading abilities. If you are talking about accuracy, good bullets and barrels for any caliber can be made to shoot great.
Why do I not shoot 308? Because I think in Tactical (PRS) and in F-Open, most shooters are shooting the same calibers and cartridges anyways. Most 308 shooters like the idea of everyone shooting the same caliber, but I argue that in F-Open and Tactical, most are shooting the same caliber/bullet already. Talking purely from a competition standpoint, shooters in tactical are using 6XC, 6 creedmoore, 6x47 lapua, 6.5 creedmoor, 6.5x47 lapua, 6 Dasher, 6 SLR, etc. There are subtle differences in these cartridges and all are practically shooting the same bullet in its caliber (105 hybrid/VLD, 107 SMK, etc for 6mm. 130 hybrid, 140 hybrid/VLD for 6.5mm). In F-Open, most are shooting 284, 284 shehane, 284 Walker, 6.5x284, 7 RSAUM, 300WSM, 6 Dasher. Again, all are shooting nearly the same bullets in its caliber class. You simply have to decide if you want a higher BC, wind bucking caliber with more recoil, or a softer shooting caliber with inherent accuracy, but gets moved around a lot when the wind comes up.Last edited by bsumoba; 10-23-2016, 9:49 AM.Comment

The 300 WSM is also winning and setting records in 600/1000 yard benchrest as well.
It is very accurate and extremely easy to load for.
Wind reading or a way of out reading the competition is what gives you wins and the late Jerry Tierney was wicked at Sacramento in the wind.Lynn Dragoman, Jr.

Everyone knows that the 6.5 creedmoor is superior ballistically to .308. Nobody is debating that. Its no secret. People have known this for a long time.
You said that no one is using .308 and that it is based on obsolete technology. Well the 6.5 creedmoor, as are all 6mm cartridges, are based on even older tech, circa 1891. There is the 6.5x55 Swede, there is also the 6.5x50 Arisaka. For you to say that .308 is dead is absurd. It is one of the most used rounds in the world. It is far more useful as an ALL PURPOSE round than 6.5 creedmoor.
And I got news for you, all firearms are based on old technology. Gunpowder has been around a very long time. There isnt really much more to improve on. In the end you are still pushing a projectile with a propellant.Last edited by Tere_Hanges; 10-23-2016, 11:22 AM.CRPA and NRA member.
