Jimmys my experiance with mosins have been fine i am lookin to get older ww2 era guns for collecting reasons i have a 1943 K98 made by steyr, then i have a post war era walther P38.

And I guess that 600 yards . . . is the maximum

Unless you go for a Mosin PU sniper . . . maybe this adds another 200 yards (if you are lucky)

Kingair i have seen tjose mosins or the add anyway, but i imagine whatever ffl here that recieves it will also charge me and it generally isnt cheap.

If you're going to pick one for target I would go 223. I can't imagine target practice with a 300 unless you have a break on it which would cost you just as much unless you have machining skills. I've hunted with a 300 mag and not bad for the one shot. To shoot 30 or 40 at a time with no break to just hit paper sounds like I'd rather be watching paint dry. 223 is pretty cheap as well.

$25 Dros and $10 Transfer fee at FFL... total $35 by law cannot exceed that and they cannot refuse to do the PPT either.

If you are talking about shipping most places charge $75 to $100, that is where it gets expensive

Big shots in Miramar used to but they are out of business now

I know Gunthers in Carlsbad only charges $75, I have had two separate JD lowers shipped there

Op specifically stated he was looking for a target rifle.
I have yet to find a shooting range that allows the taking of game while target shooting.

Even rarer would be the shooting range with elk on it...

Any of you hunt with the 8mm? Thought about getting into hunting but dont know much on it regulations etc and whats required to get into it aside from a hunting license etc.

Far more people use a 30 caliber or a 338 as there is a LOT more options in bullets or loaded ammo than there is for 8mm magnum.

Keep in mind that most mosins are war time rifles so the condition can vary widely based on who had it and how it was used or how much it was used etc. just holding it doesnt mean much until you actually shoot it.
