Some Marlin 44's have ballard rifling and some have the micro groove...... depending.
My JM stamped , cross bolt safety has the ballard and it shoots ragged holes at 50yds with my hard casts using a williams peep.
I'd prefer the ballard rifling of the 2 types in this case.

My Savage 99 in 300 Sav is about that. I have dies to reload, but have not got to it yet; I think I could shrink the grouping with handloads.

I have found most of the lever action crowd around here is into Winchester or Marlin 30-30's though... Although, the Sav-99 was made in 30-30 too...

Williams 5d 94 on my Rossi 44 mag at 50 yards getting group of 3 within an inch with federal 240hp. Surprised myself with the accuracy. It's not pretty but it gets the job gun.

I'll agree with this. I have only one .44 Marlin. ca. 2002. It is one of the "Big 5" models so the wood is a little more basic; no checkering. I shoot better with a peep sight than with the factory leaf sight. And even better still with a Weaver 2.5x atop the receiver!

Also, I have found that precision (i.e. how tight it'll group), not the same as accuracy strictly speaking, is very dependent on the bullets/loads. From my understanding, Marlin .44s are picky on the bullets they'll shoot well. This is because the bores tend to run big. I know mine's a little oversized; I slugged it. So I've discovered that my 1894 will not group well when using the more common .429" jacketed bullets. The .430" bullets (e.g. Hornady, Magtech) are capable of noticeably tighter groups.

Though I've never chrono'd my loads, it seems that velocity helps with precision. My tightest shooting loads are Hornady 240gr HPs driven by 22-23 grains of H110, which is a pretty stout load according to my shoulder. Those same bullets don't group nearly as well when using a 12 grains (Alliant's published max) of Unique.
