Lever Action...

If you want a genuine American made Winchester or Marlin 30-30 that's affordable, get on gunbroker and start hunting down older model 94's and 336's.. from there you can branch out into whatever sub models that you fancy.. I totally get your preference, I too don't care for repros or knockoffs compared to the thousands of affordable genuine articles readily available in the secondary market.. unfortunately most of what used to be in gun manufacturing is gone today so I've resigned to used old models.. not knocking the function and even appearance of some of the newer models, but they just don't do it for me like at 75 year old Winchester..I have a desire for a lever gun. Never had one. I guess a 30-30 is what I want. It looks like .357 can get expensive. If you have a few minutes, could someone give some advice on what I should look for? Marlin, Winchester? Not sure I want a Henry. I know they are probably great, but I think I want an "old name." As you can see, I haven't a clue. I just know that I want one.
Thanks in advance
this is about half of my lever collection and they're all 71's bought very reasonablely.. I have a couple of older models and even a couple of newer Henry's for my kids..
Belgium BLR .308 / Win Model 88 .308 / Win Model 94 30-30 / Marlin 336 30-30
kids Henry Golden Boys, note serial numbers are kid's initials and birth dates thanks to Anthony Imperato
Winchester model 88 .308 [second from left above]
Japanese Tasco 3-9x40 model W39X40 on Weaver rings and base

also have matching Winchester model 100 in .308
Bausch & Lomb BALFOR A 4x on Kuharsky Bros. plunger mount

a little better picture of Winchester model 94 30-30

all bought used from gunbroker auctions under $500 including vintage scopes, mounts, and slings pictured.. you can't convince me anything new manufacturer is a better deal, better feeling, better looking, or more fun to shoot than these.. only exception would be models or calibers not previously offered if that's your gig..
good luck and happy lever hunting!

I like hitting the used racks....
My go to lever is a Savage 99. I find them nicer to carry than the Win/Marlin 94 style. They were available in a variety of cartridges that I think are superior to 30/30(250 Savage, 300 Savage, 308). The action is tighter than a Win 94; when you work a Win94 it is like the whole guts of the rifle are going to fall out...
In pistol cartridge, the Marlin 94C is a ton of fun. The Marlin does not seem to have all the guts falling out when you work the lever.
If I were to get another it would be a Browning BLR in a 7mm-08 or 30-06Comment

What do you plan on doing with it and where do you plan on shooting it? And if you don't reload chamberings like 45-70 are going to get real expensive real quick.I have a desire for a lever gun. I have the 20" one in .454 Casull. Firing Casulls in it is not cheap, and not for the faint of heart. Firing "Cowboy Load" .45 Colts in it is still not cheap (unless you reloard) but it's like firing a hot .22 in terms of recoil. Absolute nothingburger, and not even all that loud. The great thing is that you have the choice depending on what you're planning to do that day. It's also just a plain bundle of giggles to take out and shoot. It was fairly rough to cycle at first, but a few hundred dry-fires (while watching some old Westerns, or perhaps Longmire) took care of that and made the trigger nice, too.
I also have a Winchester 94 in .357, which is equally a hoot to take out, but it's quite a bit heavier and the 94 action is not as smooth. 94s are a considerable bit more expensive than the Rossi (Better finish costs money) For a plain "fun gun" shooter, I'd get the Rossi and spend the extra on ammo. Lots and lots of ammo, because you'll use it.
Both of them make good companion pieces for a revolver of the same caliber."Mr. Rat, I have a writ here that says you are to stop eating Chen Lee's cornmeal forthwith. Now, It's a rat writ, writ for a rat, and this is lawful service of same!"Comment

OP, do you think the gun itself would be more expensive?
I'd like to get a 30-30, I don't even know why I don't have one seeing how I have 4 pistol caliber lever guns. Its kind of silly that I don't have one
I'd say the ammo price and fun from the .357 would beat the 30-30, that just an internet opinion though.
I've also read that the least powered 30-30 round equals the highest powered .357 round, so that's not bad from pistol cartridge.
Henry seems to be introducing new models every year, and Rossi seems to be dropping models every year. Rossi seems to be stepping up the QC, the last .357 model 92 I bought was the best of the bunch, quality is very good and its the best shooter of the 3 I have..It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.
Happiness is a warm gun.
