Start at the end and work forwards....

      What is your total budget?
(Rifle, case, base, rings, optics, cleaning rod)

      What distance can you shoot?
      Local range/ public land
1,000 yards or what distance is the max?

There is a member on the forum that shoots a mosin and gets hit on steel at 1,000 yards.....
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

First and foremost, what do you consider "long range"? As noted above, a Remington 700 in .308 is a perfect combination for shooing 500 to 800 yards, perhaps a bit more in experienced hands. If you have never shot a rifle from the 500 yard line, the targets are a long way out there. You need to assess your current skill level and work up from there.

How would you guys rate the investment in a Ruger 308 RPR vs the same money in a Remington 700 308?

The 260 and 7mm-08 are just the 308 case necked down so they are a little bit anemic when it comes to reaching the long-range the OP was after.
When I think long-range I think of a bullet with a bc over 0.500 at 3000 fps. If the bc goes up naturally the velocity can drop but 0.500 and 3000 fps is a decent place to start.
With the 22 caliber bullets the bc is horrible and when you finally reach a good bc the velocity takes a tremendous hit. At that point you are better off with a 6mm/243 or larger bullet.

Dollar for dollar id get a 700 5R instead of the ruger.

OP if you dont plan to shoot past 800 a 308 sounds perfect for you. Plenty of ammo and lots of options and about the cheapest you will find. Get a heavy barrel and a nice stock.

Another vote for 308. Best caliber to learn long distance on, IMHO, because you have to work.

If you're thinking about this being your first bolt action, I'd suggest a 223 for it's less than 1/2 the price per round than a 243 (and it will get you to 600 yards with factory ammo). Otherwise, get a 243 - its a 308 without the punishing recoil.

As its for 'practice', a Remy 700 is nice but you can get a Mossberg for much less or a Savage for a bit more.

Sorry I haven't checked in my own thread, been concerned with our latest laws. My nearest outdoor range has 600 yards, so that would be my goal. Also this would be my first bolt rifle. I plan to go to the range about 4-6 times a year.

308.... I bought 223 for me due to cost wise... cheaper to shoot 223, but hard to beat 308 bolt action rifle.

I have an SPS Tactical in 223 and 308... if I had to do it again I would have never purchased the 223 and went with a different cartridge.

I was unaware that R700 was available now in 6.5CD, thus I'd go with the 308 Win and a simple barrel change makes it a 6.5CD.

For your first bolt action, absolutely go with 308. From what you describe, the R700 is a good way to start since it's a very standardized platform. 308 ammo is readily available and this will allow you to shoot to 1,000 yards (not optimally, but it'll get you there).

Then, the .308 bolt is the standard size for most other short action cartridges so you can always simply rebarrel and have the option of many good 6mm, 6.5mm, etc. chamberings with only a barrel change.

For starters, if distance is your goal, get a variant with a 26" barrel as you'll want to get all the velocity you can from the 308.
