Don't own an axis model. But from what I have read and heard they are very good entry level guns. I think a rem 783 and ruger American are close in price also.

Did you go online for that price? Is that wood stock? I have seen some local but not for anywhere near that price.

That's a good price. If you want them you should get them. Savage makes good rifles, that's why everyone copies their designs.

i have 3 and like them a lot. stock sucks but can be fixed or buy a boyds. get a heavy barrel if you can. btw barrel swaps are 40 bucks at a GS on this site.

270 is going to be closer to the 06 if that is what you like and are familiar with.

Mauser yes. Remington no. It's not that I'm totally dedicated to Savage. It's just Savage came up with the modern designs first, that are copied.

If by "modern", you mean "cheapest to manufacture", you are correct.
Multi-piece bolts and barrel nuts to set headspace are pure cost-saving features.
No high-end custom target rifles use these features.

Savage was first to use round receivers, and receivers with solid top with smaller ejection port that require use of detachable mags to fully load, too. Do any high end custom target rifles have these features?

High end custom receivers have integral recoil lugs and scope bases so they are not as cheap to manufacture as a simple round receiver.

Guess they copied the Mauser or maybe Ruger it has integral recoil lug and scope bases.

Here is the top and bottom of a high end custom receiver. The recoil lug is both keyed and removable and there is no magazine cutout as that would weaken the receivers strength. They use dual ports now which Savage copied on there target action line.
All of the high end receivers use Remington Pattern Triggers and nobody uses a Savage trigger.
