    Picked up a Czech Mauser

It's going to be converted to 45ACP.

Previous owner sporterized it and put an old Weaver KV 60 scope on it. Scope mounts are offset a few degrees away from the bolt. hmmm.

After the conversion it will use 1911 magazines.

Well there is an answer to a question never asked.

It was asked, and answered too. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Lisle_carbine

A suppressed barrel is probably a ways off for me though.

Funny, just realized this one also has half of a Williams peep sight - just the base. I think I'll sell the scope and reinstall the peep sight. Not going to be shooting at great distances with this rifle anyway.

Did you already find the conversion kit for the mag well? Last time I looked they were not available.

You can always leave it as it is and just load it subsonic with TrailBoss powder.

I've built a 45acp on a Turkish Mauser. If I had it to do over again I'd definitely build a 45acp on a small ring instead of a large ring. The reason is the weight. A full size large ring Mauser is just too heavy to carry around as a pistol caliber carbine. The vz-24 that you have is already an excellent sporter, and is set up as a good hunting rifle. You can do as you please, but in the end I think you'd be happier if you left the sporterized Mauser as is, and built the 45 carbine on a small ring action. Also, a lot of people that have done this conversion have had feeding problems. The stubby cartridge can take a nose dive as it's stripped from the magazine. If you have this problem, you might need to fabricate and install a feed ramp into the action. On the plus side, a 45acp bolt action is fun & inexpensive to shoot. There's almost no recoil, and it's as quiet as a 22lr. If you crown the barrel, install a scope, use quality ammo, pillar and glass bed the action, and install a Timney trigger, you can expect around 2" groups at 50 yards.

Guy who makes them is here in Houston.

Great info, thank you. I'll consider your thoughts carefully. I've been thinking about the feeding issues others faced, and figured some minor fabrication might handle the issues. Thanks for the tips.

Toxic, not trying to argue but did you ever weigh a small ring next to a large ring ? I can't believe the weight difference is worth considering. The original weapons are heavy, but a lot of that is century old mil-spec stuff like hand guard bands, butt plates etc. Just curious what the receiver difference is. The actions are less than 1/8-inch in length different, and the receiver diameter is what, 1 few mm ??

I built one on an Enfield MK4 action.
Easy to make and fun to shoot.

I have a scrubbed crest Vz24 that I paid $29 or $49 for and one of the old Rheinland Arms kits.
I made the mistake of getting the barrel as an threaded but unturned 1.25" blank.
I thought it would give it that "Delisle" look but it was just too damn heavy.
I had it turned down to a .920" heavy barrel ptofile but is still quite heavy.
It has kinda been a long term project for me, especially doing the stock work.

Cool! That's what I'm aiming for - fun.

I bet it was heavy! It must have made a good club. I've got a sporter barrel in mind.

I wish I had got one of the Enfield kits when they were available, never found an inexpensive donor rifle though.
