Got wood or go limp?

1. For those far more experienced with rifles, would the bite/recoil on a synthetic stock rifle (i.e. Rem 783) in 243 be noticeably less then a Rem 700 in 270? I'm not a fan of synthetic stocks but that is where the platform continues to go (maybe I need to adjust my thinking). Scenario is range shooting with and without the use of a bipod or shooting bag.

2. Kind of related to the first question, I'd like to get a rifle in 243 for under $600 (for range use). If with a wood stock and scope, any (good or bad) thoughts on a Mossberg Patriot with a 3-9x40 scope (http://www.mossberg.com/wp-content/u...D-COMBOS.pdf)? Reviews seem to be positive. Any suggestions to consider another brand (must be a wood stock and come w/ a scope).

Well...

Yes, the .243 will "kick" considerably less than a .270 WIN.

That said, the .270 WIN, w/ factory loaded 130 gr. bullets, will produce at or below 18 Lb-Ft of recoil... the upper limit of flinch-free shooting for the average shooter.

I cut an inch off the stock of my 8.5 lb. scoped M700 BDL .270 WIN and mounted a Pachmayr F325 Deluxe Field Recoil Pad (Grind to Fit)... what a difference.

Shoots about like a .243, now.


I also got both my boys 7.5 lb. in .270 WIN. (27934) for their first hunting rifle.

Very Precise, light and handy, good VORTEX glass, and Under $400 on-line.



What's not to like?


They come w/ a very soft and effective, but probably not very field durable, recoil pad. At some point they may be upgraded to a Pachmayr.


So, are you an "Average" shooter when it comes to recoil?

Me? I am at or below. An 8.5 lb scoped 30-06 bolt-rifle is over my personal limit for precision shooting, but, the 9.5 lb. 30-06 M1 Garand is an all day marksmanship darlin'.

The Synthetic Patriot/VORTEX rifle in .270 WIN, even w/ the recoil pad, is on the edge, but the right side of that edge for me and the boys.


The walnut stock will mitigate a little recoil for ~ $100. So will the lighter .308 WIN or .243 cartridge.
