    Here is a similar rifle. These older model 700 rifles do have nice triggers. If you don't reload, invest in some Federal or Black Hills match ammo to put it through it's paces.

    The Remington 700 bolt action rifle comes in an amazing array of models. Remington started making rifles on this model in the early 1960s, and they have made many variations. Some police agencies and military snipers use this rifle as a sniper rifle, as it is a very accurate system and is...

      I think you're right, it looks just like a 700 VLS, which means it is probably much newer than I thought (not when buying it, but after looking it up). I'll know for sure on the 29th, when I get it.

        Too late now... I already bought it... I'll know for sure on the 29th. It was definitely an emotional decision, which I'm not regretting - I can't wait to get it in my hands.

          I really like the VLS stocks, too. I'm sure you will really enjoy that rifle!

            The best way to date your 700 is call Remington Customer Service and have them run the number. My 700BDL Custom has an E code number and I thought it was older, but RCS came back with a 2010 build date. Love your stock. My 700LSS has the gray laminate, very nice, but push come to shove the brown looks closer to traditional walnut...

              Scope looks to be 6.5x20, you can see 20 on the power ring so my guess is its either vari-x III or vx-3. Also it looks like it has the M1 target knobs. Anyways, nice set up.

                On the receipt should have the serial number what letter does it start with?

                  The serial number starts with the letter E.

                      I have a G prefix I bought in 07. Some M40A3 are built on G prefix actions also and are built before 05 so the E prefix would have been before that.

                        This might help.

                        The first character of the sequence will always be one of these letters:

                        B, L, A, C, K, P, O, W, D, E, R, X.

                        These twelve letters correspond to the twelve months in a year, and are the month code.

                        MONTH CODES

                        B = January

                        L = February

                        A = March

                        C = April

                        K = May

                        P = June

                        O = July

                        W = August

                        D = September

                        E = October

                        R = November

                        X = December

                        The next letter or letters will correspond to the year manufactured. NOTE – Some of these year letters repeat, as can be seen below. So a little sleuthing may have to be done to determine the exact year the firearm was manufactured. This sleuthing is accomplished in part by first determining the years that your specific firearm was manufactured. After that one brings into play what is known of the history, such as the year first acquired.

                        If these additional pieces of information still do not clear up the year of manufacture, contacting Remington Customer Service with the firearms serial number will be required. As an added bonus to Remington being able to provide the year of manufacture, they should also be able to provide the grade the firearm left the factory as.

                          Finally picked up the rifle. I called Remington and they told me it is a 1995 700 Varmint rifle.

                          The scope is a Leupold Vari-X III 6.5 x 20 x 50mm
