Yes but is al that tweeking worth the extra $5000 when you're taking a deer at 200 yards???

Also, I prefer the R700 short actions to the magnum stuff. The bolt diameter is a bit small on the larger magnums.

You had wondered if more expensive rifles are merely a status symbol. No, that is not the case (usually). If you are dealing with reputable and well-established companies, you pretty much get what you pay for. Albeit, there is decreasing marginal benefit with price.
That's what I'm driving at. Do you need a rifle that will shoot a sub 1/2 degree of angle when taking game at 200-300 yards at the most. A good portion from 50 -150. Granted if you have a mind set of long range target shooting, then yes, what ever the pocket book will bear. However most of the feedback that I read on McW's web site were of those raving about taking game at 250 yards or less. Very few, if any, were of punching paper at a 1000. Will a $5000 dollar gun out perform a good factory rifle in those instances?? Absolutely not. Will it out perform it at 1000 yards? There's a good chance it will. But even then it's the person pulling the trigger that makes for accuracy. I don't care how accurate a gun is if it ain't pointed in the right direction it won't work. I suspect a shooter that knows what his $800 dollar gun will do, and it's limitations, will out shoot a person with a high end gun when he can't hit a bull in the butt with a banjo....

Worth it to them? Well yeah, they freely spent the $$$ so it was worth it to them. Worth it to you? I guess not.

You seem to care a lot about how other people spend their disposable income.

Most of the lightweight rifles are intended for Sheep hunters.
To hunt sheep you are looking at $50.000 for a reputable guide and legitimate hunt.
Those that have $50.000 worth of disposable income tend to be older shooters in poorer health than your average tree stand Shooter.
The lightweight is a huge plus for someone in poor health or on a long hunt.

That may be true in theory, but in practice.. Not so much. If McW had to depend on sheep hunting biz to keep the doors open, they would have slammed shut a long time ago. They may design guns to chase game in remote areas, but that's not what they are primarely used for. Most are being used by Joe Average hunter on an Elk or Deer hunt. I still contend that most of those guns are being used for hunts that do not require a high end custom rifle. I'd also add that any guide that puts a price tag of 50 grand on a sheep hunt, and depends on well heeled clientele is not one I'd like to do biz with. Also if health is such that you'd have trouble packing a 6-8 pound rifle, he or she doesn't need to be there in the first place.

Probably, since 1/2 a degree at 300 yards is nearly 8 feet.

sub half degree of angle at 30 feet is still about a quarter inch. Most people want their rifle to be able to shoot quarter inch or below at 30 feet. That's only 10 yards away.
