I am looking for recommendations for a muzzle brake to use on my Remington 700 SPS 300 WIN MAG. The barrel is not threaded, so I would have to have that done. This will be for hunting in California and so far I cannot find anything that says I cannot use a muzzle brake. Ideas?

300 WIN MAG Muzzle Brake - Recommendations?
Tags: None -
Ross Schuler makes excellent brakes for $45 shipped. Very effective and the best value around.
If you want the most efficient brake, I suggest a JP Recoil Eliminator.

I run one of these on my 300. Very effective at reducing recoil, and the flat bottom reduces dust kickup when shooting prone. Extremely loud though, and makes my nose run and eyes water from the concussion after about 10 rounds.

I use Harrell's Precision muzzle brake on my .300 Win. Mag. and it feels like I am shooting a .308. http://harrellsprec.com/index.php/pr.../muzzle-brakessigpicComment

300 WIN MAG Muzzle Brake - Recommendations?
+1
1 used 2 of the T3s and the APA on my 338s. I prefer the T3s to the APA on them.
On smaller cals and magnums the JEC or APA little bast. none of them beat up the shooter or spotter if they are behind the shooter

Why would you want to deafen yourself while hunting? Brakes are for benches. How fast do you need follow up shots on a scoped .300 win mag bolt gun? Good luck with that. There might be some great brakes made but I don't see the point on a hunting rifle. I've never felt the recoil with the rush hunting provides and I have the exact same gun.Last edited by deckhandmike; 02-21-2016, 12:49 AM.Comment

It depends. There are two main uses for a muzzle brake. This is to keep the muzzle down so you can spot your hit, and it is to reduce the amount of recoil you feel.
What matters is the volume and directionality of the gas that is diverted. Muzzle brakes with flat ports (pointed directly sideways) are good for small cartridges where you want to take out the muzzle lift and they are less of a nuisance since the shockwave doesn't come back as steep. The muzzle brakes with the angled or curved back ports are good for large cartridges, but the shockwave comes back at a steeper angle and is more of a nuisance to the shooter and others.
Most of the muzzle brakes that are available will be just fine so long as they are properly installed. However, you choose the design based on what you prefer. There are many gimmicks out there made by folks that are claiming greater "efficiency". Really, if you need more muzzle brake, then the solution is to simply get a larger one that will divert a greater amount of gas.
For me, I like a large brake with flat ports that really hold the muzzle down on smaller rifles like a .308 since the recoil doesn't bother me. For the really big stuff, I want the most obnoxious brake you can get that helps with the recoil, but it is usually not too bad since I shoot large cartridges with long barrels only.Comment

Maybe try an effective break coupled with a strong straight shooting position before you make such a statement
It really is something when you see the hide take the hit thru the scope, or instantly see your animal is bolting. This is especially true if hunting by yourself or with two guys counting down to fire. Self-spotting on a 300 or 7mag is still very beneficial.

Get a Harrel's without any holes on the top. They know what a muzzlebrake does and how to build one.Lynn Dragoman, Jr.
