I sent an email to Barnes Bullets RE: the minimum impact velocity recommended for the .277/ 140 gr. TSX bullet, and got this:

Ryan Farr | Tech Support/Consumer Services Lead
    Barnes Bullets, LLC

For that bullet you will need an min. impact velocity of 2100 fps.

    Thank You
So, given a 22" Bbl., and a resulting MV of 2925 fps for the Pierce Precision 140 TSX ammo, scope sighted in at +3" @100 yards:

    140 TSX/2925
    *0.0" @ 256 yd

    +3.0" @ 100 yd

    +3.4" @ 150 yd 2584 fps 2076 lb-ft
    +2.6" @ 200 yd 2477 fps 1907 lb-ft

    +0.4" @ 250 yd 2371 fps 1748 lb-ft
    -3.4" @ 300 yd 2269 fps 1600 lb-ft

    -8.9" @ 350 yd 2168 fps 1461 lb-ft
    -16.2" @ 400 yd 2070 fps 1333 lb-ft

    -25.6" @ 450 yd 1975 fps 1213 lb-ft
    -37.2" @ 500 yd 1883 fps 1102 lb-ft
Should give a MPBR of ~ 300 yards, and work well out to ~ 400 yards.

2100 fps needed for full expansion correct? Another reason I wanted to rock the 130 grain version for the faster initial velocity.

It's been and remains a top-10 favorite of American big game hunters for a reason.

Is there a rifle manufacturer that doesn't offer a .270 Win chambering???

It's pretty much my only hunting rifle I have right now.

I tired hand loading (borrowed my buddies equipment) for awhile:
140 grain bullet with (I think) 53 grains IMR 4350 powder - it was a damn effective on deer!
I took a very nice whitetail in AZ at 350 yards with this gun!
          Dennis,

          You don't need another rifle.

The 6.5 Swede is another classic big game cartridge. One is well suited with either cartridge.

First started killing pigs, deer and antelope with a Rem 700 in 270. Used 150 grin corlokts and they worked great on all 7 animals I shot with that gun. DRT. Will be hand loading 130 Hornady Interlokts for future hunts with that gun, which i haven't used since acquiring the most pristine Win M70 pre-'64 in 308. That gun has had trigger work, floated barrel and bedding/pillar work done on it by one of the 5 best long range class shooters in Cali. Long live the 270!!

What holds the .277/ 130 gr. TSX back is its relatively low B.C. of 0.374.

Out of that same 22" Bbl., and resulting MV of 3000 fps for that 130 gr. TSX round, and scope sighted in at +3" @100 yards:

                  130 TSX/3000
                  *0.0" @ 262 yd

                  +3.0 @ 100 yd

                  +3.5 @ 150 yd 2627 fps 1992 lb-ft
                  +2.8 @ 200 yd 2510 fps 1818 lb-ft

                  +0.7 @ 250 yd 2395 fps 1656 lb-ft
                  -2.9 @ 300 yd 2284 fps 1505 lb-ft

                  -8.2 @ 350 yd 2175 fps 1366 lb-ft
                  -15.3 @ 400 yd 2069 fps 1236 lb-ft

                  -24.4 @ 450 yd 1967 fps 1116 lb-ft
                  -35.8 @ 500 yd 1867 fps 1006 lb-ft
The MPBR is still ~ 300 yards, and the effective range is still out to ~400 yards... same as the 140 gr. TSX.

Although, you could improve on that, a little, w/ stout hand-loads.

35 Whelen is in the corner crying I get no love. If you would just load me with 200gr bullets and a barrel with the right twist. Man I could take anything down out to 400yds.

Crap, Midway lied to me. They have the 130 grain listed at a bc of 0.431!

Gonna call them in the morning and exchange them for the ttsx in 130 grain. The bc of 0.392 and 3050 fps should get me out to 400+ yards at over 2100 fps.

Update on the Barnes .277/ 140 gr. TSX bullet Minimum Impact Velocity question:

                          Ty Herring | Consumer Service
                          Barnes Bullets, LLC

The .277 cal 140gr TSX requires a minimum impact velocity of 2100fps for beginning yet reliable expansion in our water tank test. We suggest a minimum impact velocity on game of 2200fps for good bullet expansion and good wound channel.

                          Thanks, Ty

Cartridge debating is getting old with nothing more than rehashed rhetoric. Therefore, I've petitioned to remove all other cartridges except for the .270 Winchester. That way we can all live in peace, love, and harmony, or however that dope-smoking hippie line goes.

BTW, I actually think that the .280 Rem is a better cartridge ;-) But the .270 Winchester is pretty darn close to nirvana.

Grew up hunting with a milsurp 30-06. In 1972 at the age of 13 I used some calf money and bought a 700 ADL in .270. It was my primary hunting rifle until five years ago even though I have rifles chambered in a number of cartridges including a two 30-06's. I will be the first to admit the 30-06 is more versatile. I killed all of my deer, hogs and one elk with 130 grain Core-Lokts.

After my third shoulder operation I purchased a CZ 550 American 6.5x55 in 2010 because I wanted less recoil. Started hand loading because I wanted to wring everything I could out of the cartridge. My rifle likes Berger 130 grain Hunting VLD's the best. I still love the .270 but like the Swede just as much.

I don't understand the obsession with short action cartridges. For me the difference in weight is negligible. I have LA and SA rifles, it doesn't matter to me. My first .243 was a standard short action. My latest on is a LA because I wanted to seat VLD's way out there. It's just as accurate as my SA .243 and is not a custom rifle. It is a rebarreled Vanguard.

130 ttsx out my 270. The faster the better Barnes work. My venture puts them sub moa, even at almost 400 yards.
My tikka shoots 168 ttsx just as good. But for me the 270 is better long distance shooter.
270 is my deer gun with 06 as a back up.
06 is my elk gun with 270 as back up
All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.
