I agree with the OP as well. Switched over to a Tikka T3 last year for huting in the .270 WSM and have not looked back since.
The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes.... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." - Thomas Jefferson (quoting 18th century criminologist Cesare Beccaria)"

What bullets are you using on what game? Building my first 270 for a dedicated game hunter.

Haven't bought a box of factory ammo in a long while. I already stocked up on 130 TSX meat gitters. I was hoping for some second hand research on game. But if you like the 140's that's good enough for me.

I've got some first hand experience on game with the .270, 130gr TSX. I live/hunt in the current "buzzard proof ammo" zone. 3 DRT one shot deer kills, ranges from 158 yds out to 350 yds.

One, the 158 yd shot, was shot "twice with the same bullet".

I like their game performance. And will not be switching to 140s

Awesome, thanks for posting. Your hits were vitals, or neck/head?

                    Amen and amen!

I've bought a Winchester Model 70 (Featherweight) in .270 in the mid-80's, killed a bunch of deer with it; from the forest in New England to the deserts of AZ (in all kinds of weather) and a lot places in between!

It's pretty much my only hunting rifle I have right now.

I tired hand loading (borrowed my buddies equipment) for awhile:
140 grain bullet with (I think) 53 grains IMR 4350 powder - it was a damn effective on deer!
I took a very nice whitetail in AZ at 350 yards with this gun!

I recently killed a pig with a Barnes TSX 130 gr and it did its job. The pig was shot behind the eye and the round exited towards the back of the rib cage and was found right under the hide.

I shot a 270lb Boar earlier this year with a short barrel 243. Hit him dead square in the shoulder with an 80 grain Barnes TTSX and he flopped over. Didnt take a single step, so Im glad to hear a 130 grain TSX out of a 270 is a good choice.

Two heart shots, and one neck shot. The neck shot was at 158yds, laser ranged after the shot. Was weird, two hits with one bullet. Buck standing directly facing me. Just below crest of ridge opposite me. Wind blowing like a mother in laws mouth.

Spotted buck, buck spotted me. He just stood there confused trying to figure out why the weird human on the opposite ridge was doing contortionist routine.

When I saw him, I went to kneeling position. Damn wind blowing me all over the place. Couldn't keep crosshairs on him. Scooted sideways a bit and rested against a manzanita limb still kneeling, same story. Went to sitting position, same story, crosshairs all over the map. Stood up and pulled off backpack. Dropped it on ground for shoulder support and assumed a creedmore position. Finally had the stability to make the shot.

Bang! dead deer. My spotter said "DAMN, I've never seen that before". Buck did backflip when hit and disappeared.

When we got to him he was laying on his back in some low manzanita right where hit, with all four legs in the air, like a sleeping dog. He had literally flipped oven on his back at shot.

First entry dead center, at base of neck, exited just above withers in back of neck. Right through the spine. Because he was standing facing slightly downhill his rump was higher than his shoulders. After exiting his neck, the bullet hit him again, just right of center on his rump.

So I now claim I shot the same deer twice with one bullet.

I never shoot for head. I have come upon dead deer twice that had their jaws shot up. One twitch, flinch, or turn of head, at shot. All it takes is an inch or two off and you have a horribly wounded animal that suffers until it dies. But is capable of running for miles. Often many days or weeks later. One had obviously died of starvation.

I shoot for the heart, shoulder, or spine. Where an inch or two doesn't matter.

Yeah no head shots for me either. Vitals or neck shot if the planets align just right. Most animals move their heads too much to make a sure hit.

That's a fun story about two hits with a singe bullet. Thanks for sharing.

The 140 TSX is a heavy bullet.

I got'em so that I could also use'em for big hogs in the woods of Louisiana.

Like I said, I also got some Federal 130 gr. tipped Trophy Copper ammo for the Soviet Provence. Probably the best choice as both the B.C. and M.V. are better.

Have read where 2600 fps is the low-end of the sweet-spot for the copper bullets, but have not verified it.

.270...the first unnecessary gimmick based on .30-06 perfection.

My first rifle was my dad's first rifle passed down to him. It was a .270 and for that reason alone I will always love the cartridge. If you don't live the idea of Jack O'Connor, wide open western hunting and the .270, you should be booted out if America.
