Converting 700 Remington to a magazine setup. Differences?

For an R700, the single stacking AI magazine is the gold standard. When it comes to magazines, Accuracy International is the best name with the best price.

thanks GoobMcNasty for posting this. i just jailed my first Remington 700 SPS Tactical .223 and looking to get the Timney flat trigger and wanted to mod the mag area to handle more rounds.

good to hear the PTG will work. but from the link provided.. which one would i need without modding the stock in order for it work with the Timney flat trigger?

There are NO AICS magazine compatible DBM's that will fit into your stock WITHOUT modding the stock.
There is also nobody that will inlet the injection molded "wet noodle" remington stock that comes on the SPS models.
Plan on replacing the stock asap.
When you do, order a stock inletted for the M5 DBM and then you can use any of the M5 flush or M5 stealth DBM's.
All short action's use AICS short action mags.
There are different AICS mags for different calibers, either 308 family or 223.
The 223 mags are cheaper because they are plastic.
The 308 mags are metal and more expensive.
Magpul is now producing cheap plastic 308 AICS "compatible" mags.

It's going to cost at least $550 to get a stock that takes AICS magazines and has an adjustable cheekpiece and length-of-pull.
There's really no way around that.
If you skip the adjustable cheekpiece and length-of-pull, you can order a laminated stock from Boyds for $130 and then a $100-$130 PTG DBM that will drop into it.

As well as some Rem 700 HS Precision Take off stocks that came off Remington R5 Mil spec

I have the 700 SPS Tactical in .308 and I'm happy with the stock so far. I put a stock pack on it for height adjustments and luckily I didn't need a length adjustment. It has hit steel past 1,000 yards in the rain so I'll probably reach ammo limitations before the stock becomes an issue.

Eventually, I'll want magazines. Have you also considered starting with a new rifle altogether? I haven't looked into resale value but if it's low then I'll just modify it. For the price of the typical conversion, though, you can get the Magpul Hunter 700 stock + magwell, ~$300.

segfault: funny you mentioned that, cuz i saw that on Midway last night for the Magpul Hunter 700 stock + magwell. but the mag they have is mainly for the .308; whereas mine is .223. can i just get the mag elsewhere, if so which type would i need to work with this magpul hunter?

You should be able to use an AI 223 plastic mag in the Magpul DBM as both of those parts follow the AICS short-action pattern.
The Boyd's target stock, a PTG bottom metal and an AI 223 mag would be about the same price as the Magpul setup, but would be more appropriate for target shooting.
The Magpul hunter is NOT a precision rifle stock.
It's a hunting stock.

If you're looking for 223 mags, you'll probably want to look at those made MDT Tac: http://mdttac.com/magazines.html

They claim to be AI compatible, I have a pair on the way just to see the fit and function, borrowing a relative's stock to see if I like it.

Ar15: I'll be shooting mainly bench rest and occasional prone position. I like Boyd's stock as many suggested for CZ 22LR but might be too nice to accidental scratch up. [emoji24]

But goo to know that the magpul Hunter is for hunting and not precision. From their YouTube vids I wouldn't thought it is.

Just a heads up for those interested Boyds started offering an adjustable cheekpiece on some of their stocks. I have one for a Tikka and its pretty good, especially for a hunter.
