    Too much gun?

What happens if you buy too much gun?

I've evolved from my early desires and am now a bit more focused. I have learned that one first picks the job, then the projectile, and then the cartridge to push it.

But I can't help wanting to maximize my purchases.

A 7mm RSAUM is a bee in my bonnet. I'm sure it kicks harder than I want to put up with. I'm sure with an GMX or a TTSX bullet it would punch right through both lungs of a critter and a shoulder to boot.. but so would a 7-08. So why do I want a RSAUM?

If I did go that route, can one down-load the round so its less punishing? I mean, people buy corvettes all the time and then drive them 65 right? But if they NEED the power, its there.

I like everything I've read about 7mm. I like the BCs, I like the variety of projectiles, I like the grain weights. I'm sure I would be just fine with 7-08, but if costs about the same either way (powder and brass not withstanding) why NOT go with the bigger case?

    So what is the job?

Job is taking game, but also fun shooting (target/steel). In my hunter's ed class the instructor said out-of-state antelope in Wyoming tags cost... $36. But also useful for probably anything in north america.

Then there's stretching out and doing long range silhouette and what not. The 20" 223 doesn't have enough juice even with the 77s to knock down the rams, and is inappropriate for hunting anyway, with so many better choices.

Why not go with 7mm Rem Mag? Plenty of power for North American Game, ammo is readily available and the recoil is not much more than a 30-06.

Plenty of 7mm ammo available in different loadings and tons of reloading data too.

I think you could load light loads if needed. You could also figure our how to shoot a big gun, and use tricks like a muzzle brake and a shooting pad.
I love old russian military guns and loaded up some "parlor loads" for the Mosins.
Still shoot them but now they feel like a .22

I agree with LowThudd. My Remington 700 in 7mm Rem Mag is my most accurate rifle. Plus, I can find ammo pretty much in any store.

I have killed numerous elk (cows and bulls), a moose, a black bear, dozens of deer, and even antelope with a 7 win mag. Bullet selection is the biggest factor as a partition/nosler seems to perform well at most hunting ranges.

The 300 win mag has a bit more punch at longer ranges, but I have rarely had the need to pull the trigger beyond 400 yards.

Gotta go with this. The 7mm RM is a mighty fine round and has remained as popular as it has for very good reason. I don't see anything that the 7mm RSAUM brings to the table that the 7mm RM hasn't already dished up time and again over the last 53 years.

And yes, the 7mm RM is downloadable, much like the .30-06 is.

If it's 7mm bullets you want, go .284Win. Uses the .473" bolt-face and can launch 180s faster than you'd need for game.

Good brass is available as is factory ammo.

You can down load your choice. If you like it then buy it. It is your money and you will be using the rifle.
My Wy Pronghorn tags cost more than double(for does and bucks much more) what your instructor said. Please have him get tags for me for 2016 at that price. I call BS.
I had a 7mmRem mag and had it rebarreled to 264Win mag. I like it much better and it has less recoil. I also have a 7mm-08 and it works. I prefer it over the 7mag.
I like the 25-06 for long range(and short) hunting of Pronghorns/deer and such. Using 120gr Swift A-Frame bullets it will take elk just fine. The 257Weatherby is even better and shoots flatter with less recoil than a 270.

Buy what you like. I have taken game with 223/257Roberts/25-06/257Weatherby/6.5X55/308win/30-06/300Win mag/338Win mag/30-40Krag/7mmRem mag/7mm-08/357mag/44mag(rifle and pistol). I also have 264Win mag/45-70/50bmg/454casull waiting for their turn to take game.

I shoot what I want and pair it with the appropriate cartridge and bullet for the game and conditions I am hunting. I do not worry over what some keyboard commando who probably has never taken game or has only taken a couple of animals has to say. "I personally" do not feel a 223 or a 6mm/243 is a good choice for most hunting. If I am hunting open areas with little hunting pressure they can be fine for some deer and pronghorn hunting. But that is just my take after many years of successful hunting on public ground mostly
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

I thought OP was discussing recoil? Not humping a giant rifle all over the wilderness.
