That's a good price for any rifle. Put a simple Redfield scope on it and you are good to go. As you grow your collection, I'd still keep it as a backup, loaner rifle. Also, at that price, you won't worry about scratches and dings.

If the stock fit is good then don't mess with it. A detachable magazine is not needed for a hunting rifle, All my serious hunting guns have internal magazines or are single shots.

I'm just going to echo what most have said already: You can't make a mistake on a new rifle for only $300 OTD. It fits you, it shoots the caliber you were looking for, and if you decide to move on, it will make a great loaner or backup rifle/truck gun.

If you are really after a detchable mag, it would be a better choice to sell the ATR and buy a Tikka. But for the money you did ok. Id at least use it for a while to help you decide what you really want and need out of a rifle then move on to something else. A bit of knowledge and experience will really help you make efficient decisions in the future.

I fully planned on getting the Tikka, but when it was offered, it sounded like a good deal. further research showed it as a so-so deal. I am pretty confident I can sell it for what I paid for it and still get my Tikka.

Yup, it was a good deal. It's a perfectly serviceable hunting rifle. Put some glass on it and take it hunting. Don't worry about buying the Tikka unless you just want to add another rifle to the mix.

For what its worth, Gallery of Guns is usually the cheapest place to order specific models through. I have a few local gun stores that show $670 out the door for a blued Tikka.

Luckily, we have several great shops in town. The one I will be buying it from has already quoted me $600 for the compact which should be about $670 OTD plus he will be threading the barrel for me. It is still on my to do list, but now that I have this one, I'm going to give it a shot first to see what it will do. I have a decent trader rating so I do know a little about the marketplace. The only bad thing about the marketplace that I have found is that buyers want me to drive 4-6 hours and pay the same as local buyers.

Let's face it, you're still going to buy the Tikka, because if you don't, you'll never stop thinking about it. The only question is whether you decide to sell the Mossberg or not. Take it to the range, if you like it, keep it and buy the Tikka later, and if you don't like it, sell it and buy the Tikka now. Pretty simple.

It's always nice to have a back up rifle. For a couple hundo I'd keep it unless I really needed the $ for the tikka.

Had a buddy bust his scope on a rock when he slipped. No biggie he says. "I'll run into town, buy a scope, shop will mount and bore sight, and I'll zero it in. I don't want a rifle I'm not familiar with, etc., etc."

Meanwhile we all tagged out. Second buddy used the spare rifle from a third buddy just to prove a point. First buddy ate tag soup. Everyone else got a hog.
