    Remington 5R .308 Mil-spec

Just started DROS today on a Remington 5R .308. I saw this at Turners and haven't seen much on this particular model, so I thought I'd scoop it up before it disappeared since I've only seen it on their shelf once before. Most of you have seen the 5R with the black/green stock, stainless barrel and jeweled bolt; however, this one has some considerable differences.

-FDE/ black patterned stock - Feels like an H&S stock, or similar design
-fluted heavy barrel with threaded muzzle and thread protector
    -black finish instead of stainless

It definitely caught my eye and I'm excited to see how it does. I'm undecided on glass as of right now, but I'm thinking I'll end up going with either a Vortex PST, or a Leupold Mark 4.

Anyone see these before? I got a discount on it, so I definitely am excited to test it out with some good glass. It looks and feels to be a rifle meant for shooting far distances.

I just started dros on one yesterday at Riflegear. Paid $1349 pre tax and dros. Can I ask what the Turner's price was?

I got it for $1399. Sounds like it wasn't too bad. I spend a lot of money there so they kicked off $100.

I think that is a Lew Horton special. Nice package of features.

I find the comb on those stocks to be too low. I drilled some holes in mine and mounted a Karsten adjustable cheek rest and now when I shoot it, I feel like a king!

Add a base, rings, and glass, load up some Sierra MatchKings to compensate for the inevitable long throat, and that gun will probably show you how well you can actually shoot. Add a new trigger, and you will be happy and content. You will be congratulating yourself on your wise choices!

Should I go with a one piece base?

Yes, one piece quality base with rings ( Badger type ) but the one piece mount is gaining popularity

                What type of Scope?

Just ordered up a Nightforce one piece base with the 20 minute can't to it. I ran this same base on my Savage Police model and had no reason to not use it again. I'm thinking for glass I'm going to stick with my gut and go with a Leupold Mark 4 with Nightforce rings.

My Savage Police was a nail driver, but this rifle has a few things that I wish my Savage didn't, so I really don't want to spare any expense. Not sure if I'm going to go with a brake yet, but it has the threaded muzzle, so I have the option.

What's your glass budget. Leupold isn't as good as it used to be. I'm a big fan of vortex.

I'd like to keep it at or below $1000. I normally wouldn't immediately lean towards leupold, but the Mark 4 scopes I have worked with have been outstanding.

What about a Nightforce C522 SHV - 4-14x56 for glass? Seems reasonably priced. Not sure if the objective is too big.

It depends on what you plan to use your rifle for.

The shv is a hunting scope with limited ability to dial in adjustments.

If you plan on hunting with that beast, then it's a good scope. For everything else you have much better options at $1k

Thanks for the tip Dave. Other than my savage which I ran a Leupold Vr-X on, I have limited knowledge of long range optics.
