Help me choose my first 308

I have the Ruger and the recoil is a little much for a plinker. I just got the Savage 10FCP-k 24" heavy fluted barrel with a brake. Haven't shot it yet but it weighs a ton and I expect the recoil to be considerably less than the Ruger.
I plan on replacing the flash hider on the Ruger with a brake and hope it reduces the recoil enough to make it more pleasant to shoot.
The Ruger would be my pick for hunting, light and handles well. For a range/target/plinker it would not be my first choiceAttached FilesComment

First .308? Why not a Ruger American Rifle, Savage 10-series, or Rem 700? I can personally attest to the RAR and Rem 700 ADL Varmint from recent experience; both will reach out there to 1,000 yards.
Note: the RAR is a little light for plinking. It's really a hunting rifle. But it comes right up to my shoulder very nicely. The Rem 700 ADL Varmint is very easy to plink with, but carrying it around after a while, it can feel a little heavy. Perhaps a Savage 11VT, with the thicker 24" barrel, would be a good happy-medium.
And don't overlook the used market. You can get some pretty darn good deals, and if the bore's in good shape, it should be a shooter.Last edited by Cowboy T; 08-03-2015, 5:49 AM."San Francisco Liberal With A Gun"

To be a true Liberal, you must be 100% pro-Second Amendment. Anything less is inconsistent with liberalism.Comment

Tikka or the venture.
I like my 06 tikka for hunting as it is lighter. But my venture in 270 is a tack driver. They are under rated for sure. So for plinking I'd go with the venture. But I'd go 7-08 for less recoil.Last edited by FishnHunt; 08-04-2015, 8:21 PM.All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.Comment
