buy one with the fastest twist rifling if you intend to shoot out to 600 yards or more.

              Mossberg MVP.
Completely underrated and insanely accurate out of the box. You will not be disappointed.

Weatherby Vanguard Series 2. Guaranteed sub MOA out of the box with premium ammo. I took mine out for the first time a couple of weeks ago and it was amazingly accurate with my 69gr SMK handloads.

Ruger American( bought one under $400without scope), Tikka T-3 Lite(just bought one for under $550 with factory Burris scope), Weatherby Vanguard.

Also the Savage is good as is the Marlin but I rate them a bit below the above ones. I own all but the Marlin and a friend has one of those.

Most important is not what others think you should have but what FITS YOU. That and what YOU like. That is the rifle to buy.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

I was wondering why no one was recommending the Rem 700 Varmint SF because I bought my Remington 700 VSSF 0.223 for $600 awhile ago. Wow! I didn't know how much they have gone up in price now.

Get a R700 SPS Varmint. It's got a 26" 1:12" twist. You'll shoot 45-55gr bullets very well. This is perfect for beginners that want to use bulk ammo like 55gr PMC for inexpensive practice on steel targets. A fast twist is good for shooting heavier bullets, but at that point, why not just move up to a 6mm? The 1:12" with high velocity varmint bullets and such will get you out to 500-600 yards. That's fine for most folks that are using a 223 to learn.

That's what I did with my R700. I shot out the 223 barrel, got a new bolt, had it trued, and it's now chambered in 6mm. The 20" 1:12" barrels are junk though as they don't give you good enough velocity.

223 Ninja twists in bolt rifles, I just don't see it. If you want heavies for distance, 6mm is superior in every way for 70-105 (some even use the 115s). The 6mm heavies even in things like the little 6BR will shoot to 1,000 yards with as much difficulty as taking a sip of water.

Thus, when folks whine about the Remington slow-twist, just keep your objectives in mind. Shooting to 800-1,000 with .223 is only really done as a personal challenge. Learn with the regular .223 45-55gr bullets, then get a real cartridge for longer range. JMHO.

I have the Savage Axis in .223. Best value per dollar, and its awesome. Smooth bolt, decent trigger on mine, shoots .5MOA with 55gr Hornady V-Max, 5 round mags, and its pretty light. I have headshot prairie dawgs out past 400 yard with mine. Really really love the gun. I think I paid $300 bucks for it, with a Redfeild 3x9 mounted on it.
