Great caliber, will do everything a .308 Win will do.

Shoot 308 and 30-06. 30-06 works great all around, but shines with heavier bullets.

30-06 is reamed for Ackley Improved. Handloading that, you can put some extra umph on it. Doesn't make it a 300 Mag, but it is faster than a regular 30-06. Fun to play with. Previous owner took an elk with 180gr Noslers out of the rifle; it is a solid performer.

What are you going to do with the Rifle? The 300 mags have a brutal recoil as compared to the 30/06 or 308.

Though you can of course get them in .308, 30.06 is the original cartridge for the U.S. rifle, caliber .30 M1 (M1 Garand), the greatest battle implement ever devised. For that reason alone, worth keeping a case or two of 30.06 on hand, as well as plenty of en bloc clips.

Of course here in Texas "30.06" has another, less desirable connotation...

I just bought that rifle in 300 WinMag, Cabelas in Reno tracked one down for me. I was thinking of getting the 30.06 but already have my share. The rifle is fairly heavy and the stock is very comfortable. The comb doesn't look all that high, but with a 5 to 20X Monarch 3 and low Warne rings you get a solid cheek weld. Factory trigger is OK, easily adjustable after applying a little heat to whatever goop those devious folks at Remington now use to cover the allen screw. The forend is broad & flat and should be great off sandbags.

I had the muzzle threaded and larger bolt handle attached.

With modern reloads the 30.06 comes pretty close to the 300 H & H, about 150 fps slower in the 180 grain weights.

Regarding the "308 is the same as 30.06" - well, OK. I suppose some folks would say Sofia Vergara and Totie Fields are the same too .....

What calibers are you currently shooting?

                                What distances do you shoot?

Are you involved in any competition? Sniper, mid/long range, BPCR, silhouette, highpower, military rifle/silhouette?
