Tikka T3 Lite stainless/synthetic in either cartridge. Keep in mind cost and availability of lead free ammo.

Tikka T3 in SS either 30-06 or 270 would be my choice. Spend some money on a good scope too. That rig will outlast your kid's kid's.

I recently read that law banning all lead for hunting by 2019 Would 308 fair better with the future lead ban?

                Also try shouldering the
Savage Youth 7mm-08 the shorter LOP and Shorter Barrel make it very handy.

A few times I have been able to one hand wield and fire the rifle while ridding my horse. 7mm-08 feels like 30-30. A .308 might have tiped me out of the sadle.

My guess is there wont be a big difference in cost or availability of 270 or 308 lead free ammo, both are very popular deer hunting cartridges.

.270 Win is minimum cartridge for African Game. Works well on most all American Game Animals.

Tikka is going to be the "standard" high value recommendation. They do have a lot of plastic and are all long action even if you have a short action caliber. If this is going to just be a designated hunting rifle I would look at the Browning X-Bolt and maybe opt for stainless finish.

For a hunting cartridge I'm going to say that .270 is a better option than .308 having owned both. Any common hunting cartridge is going to have lead free options. Also, during the post Sandy Hook scare I personally always saw .270 still on the shelves.

.243 is also a popular option for medium sized game.

I'd probably go with something like a Leupold 2-7 on these, don't really need more power for deer or hog hunting with a 308.

Any value to a threaded barrel? I can't image a muzzle brake or flash hider would be useful on a rifle like this? Since suppressors are no-gos.
