Any caliber in the 6.5 family will do you good, 6.5Grendel, 6.5x55, 6.5Lapua, 6.5 Creedmoor and 260remington just to name a few. ...or you can NEVER go wrong with the good old .308Win.

Ill go to the range and plug off 100 to 200 rounds through a rifle. Sometimes weekly. I see guys shoot 20 rounds and go home pretty regularly, but thats not me.

If the majority of your life is going to be spent 600 yards and in then 6BR.

Plenty of great platforms for it if you really get into it - so you can build a collection of rifles (and even pistols) around the caliber as easily as you can with 5.56.

The hardcore guys will say that a good 5.56 marksman rifle will give you the distance out to 1000 yards, but the kind of ammo you need to use to get out there accurately is almost as expensive as mid-grade .308 so may as well just go with .308.
                  Well now...I must be hardcore!lol...

7mm-08 or .260. I say that from the stand point of reloading, they use less powder than the .308. But for every other need you stated, .308 is prefect.

                      30-06

                      Cheap
                      Available everywhere
                      Easy to reload
                      Easy on the barrel
                      Relatively low recoil
Will do everything a 308 will and will be good for 3-400 more yards and can use heavier bullets for better trajectory and less wind deflection.

Any of the 6mm and 6.5mm will be MUCH MUCH harder to find loaded rounds or components for.
30 cal is probably thee most prolific for components.

6 and 6.5 br, ppc, dasher, and creedmore are still wildcats for the most part.
30-06 has been established for 100+ years.

30-06 is not any more harder or easier to reload.

30-06 has more recoil than all the other cartridges mentioned.

30-06 uses the same bullet as 308.

6 BR, 6 dasher, 6.5 creedmoor are not wildcat rounds. They are recognized cartridges by SAAMI. If your criteria for a non-wildcat round is 100 years of service, then there are a lot of wildcats out there.

I don't think the dasher is SAAMI spec. And it's crazy rare that I'll agree with Thorax, but I do love the .30-06. I think OP should get a 6BR but I still like the big 06.

The 6BR gets 1800 rounds to a 8 pound keg.
6BR brass is good for 25 reloads and cost $86 for 100 pieces of Lapua brass.
                            1000 CCI 450 Magnum primers cost $30 and 1000 Sierra 107 MatchKings Runs $250.
My 50 BMG's get 224 rounds for the same 8 pound keg.
100 pieces of Lapua brass just set me back $581 shipped and will last 5-6 firings.
50 BMG primers cost 12 times more or $360 for a 1000 primers.
The 6BR shoots 20 moa flatter than a 308 winchester and 1/2 inch groups mean your scope is falling apart or something is broken.
The 6BR is the Ballistic Twin of the 300 Win Mag out to 1000 yards in every category except retained energy.
There's are many 1000 yard Benchrest records set by the 6BR and none by any of the Creedmores
The only thing you need to remember is you need 8.5 twist or faster on your barrel.
As soon as you buy your first 6BR all your 22 centerfires will become obsolete. The only fun gun is an accurate gun and the 6BR will shoot in the low threes with factory ammo from Graf & Sons.

Don't let the little round fool you...it is deceiving when you see this compared to the magnum or larger calibers and you think bigger is better.

This round is nearly unbeatable out to 600 yards with the right driver and load worked up and will easily work out to 1K.
