    2000 Yard Rifles Needed

Guys we are going to test out a target system at 2000 and 2500 yards very soon and if all is well we will be holding a 2000 yard match shortly after that.
The president/owner of the URSA is getting the 37 inch gongs welded up as of yesterday so they will hold the IRIS target system.
When a hit is made there will be a light array that lights up too let you know of the hit.
We can remotely reset the system up to 4500 yards.

I am posting this as I expect a match in March weather permitting and want to give everyone a heads up especially those who have been contacting me.

The biggest delay right now is in finalising the location.

We have Barstow and the Clearlake Berryessa areas in mind unless someone has a place were we can shoot to 2000 yards closer by the bay area?
I am working on a ranch near Petaluma but if we get it there will be no dogs or smoling while on the ranch.

For more info check out the URSA website.
    Lynn Dragoman Jr your
    URSA SW Regional Director.

The matches are open to everyone and I dont know what the fee for shooting will be as of yet. I am guessing around $25 but don't quote me on that. We are doing a practice run to make sure the gongs will handle the bigger rounds as will the portable target stands.
No sense holding a match with untested equipment and ruin everyones fun.

Any legal gun is welcome as long as it is deemed safe to fire. I fully realise that the big boomers have some special handling requirements not necessary with the 50 BMG and smaller rounds so if your shooting something way out of the norm don't worry just let me know so it can be explained to those not familiar with these platforms so we dont scare anyone off.

Bolts out at all times unless the rifle used makes this impossible then a chamber flag will be required. Guys this isn't a request it is a safety rule so no exceptions allowed ever.
Chamber flags will be gven out for free for those without one.

You will also need hearing and eye protection to fire wether your own or borrowed.

My truck only has a 6 foot bed on it so bring as much gear as you can. I will bring four 37 inch gongs and all the target frames plus spare parts with the target system so throw in a bench or two plus guns, ammo and shooting stools I am fully loaded.

Any help in setting up is appreciated as the gongs weigh 118 pounds each without brackets.

I usually have shim material in my glove box but I don't have any spare screws due to all the possibilities so if you don't have your gun dialed in please bring your own longer screws. In the past we had a portable generator but with the new target system in my truck there is no room so we can't grind you any screws. If in doubt buy long and we can file them to fit in a pinch.

All the matches are remote so bring everything you will need for the day and pack it all out with you at the end of the day so we dont have litter issues.

I might as well say it here that the number one thing borrowed/forgot at home is toilet paper. I keep one roll behind my seat in a ziploc bag. Everyone is welcome to it but the ladies get preference and once it is gone it is gone. If you want to drive home with a complete shirt and both socks please put a roll in your vehicle now. I always bring a shovel.

I don't shoot long range, but I'd love to see what it's about. If you hold the event up here (SF Bay Area) and need volunteers to set-up/tear-down/whatever, drop me a line.

If I was CONUS I'd love to join, but I have some buddies both north and south who would be into this. Got a point of contact I can send their way?

                  2000 Yard Rifles Needed

Just a note on the bolt out when in the desert laying on the ground..

I shoot ELR as my main interest, so I promise I have no intent on being a stick in the mud. Places shown below, like most of the Nevada and CA desert have a layer of dirt blown by the dry winds. Most ELR guns that don't use a can are braked. The fine gritty dust covers everything within a few firings of big calibers using brakes when set prone. Leaving you ammo box open or your bolt is a very bad idea if others are firing. You'll have grit in your chamber in no time.

I just finished a LR Tac match Sunday.. The match director had a great safety secondary check process that ensured chambers were empty but allowed the bolts to be closed.

The only other idea would be to shoot with the muzzles well back and inside the cover of a shooting mat or tarp.

Nice group for 2000 yards. I don't know what size your gong is but the group looks like 16 inches?
The bolts out rule means no bolts in your rifles at any time you are not on the line firing. We don't bring rifle stands so most shooters leave there rifles in the case until it is there then to go hot.
We will bring the rifles to the line once the range is safe to fire. You will get a timed sight in then a timed record target period.
Once you are done shooting you pull your bolt.when the time is up and the ceasefire is called all rifles will be pulled off of the line.
If dust is a problem bring a small towel for your bolt and another to cover your action and ammo.
I will try and post a picture of my SureFeed for my ammo. It keeps your ammo at the same height for each shot which keeps you from guessing were your next round is plus you don't lift your head between shots which will slow you down.

If in the Barstow area, I may be down to go up there and check it out. Not to shoot of course, I'm still messing around at 100 yrds with my 10/22, but it would be cool to see you guys at work.

The plate is 24" mistakenly set at an angle for slightly less than 20" wide visible at 2,400 yards.

There is actually two different groups, each group is only about 3" apart the two shots closest but left of center were fired from a closer position. These are the larger watermarks (signatures).

The 2,400 yard position and the active splash caught by the target cam, is the group low right of center. Any group that small is luck more than anything else. Putting things in prospective for someone who has not yet experienced ELR shooting and the prep it takes to hit, a .1mil click of a scope, moves the impact about 8" and anything more than quartering a MOA or less sized target is near impossible (with mirage at that distance).

I understand, nowhere I tend to shoot LR or ELR has stands either, cases are problematic too as you usually can not drive exactly to a shooting location. Here is a image from the one of the shooting stations. Shooting stations and targets are spread thru the hills of the LR match (no mats or spotting scopes allowed) I was mentioning. Targets on this station end above the back of the long valley over the garage, spread up at the very top on the farthest hills:

Gotcha, I was only mentioning the match directors bolt in safety protocol because it was very well thought out. No guns are allowed to be cased or handled except the active shooter once the safety check is complete. Guns were checked and double checked by a control and the bolts were actively decocked. I know it is not benchrest or square range protocol, but it is very effective for the type of match. I can put you I touch with them if you would like more details. I understand it is your event so in no way am I doing anything but trying to offer help..

I use ammo MTM boxes closed, but only after I've learned the hard way and generally use a repeater action, but even with long MTC solids single feeding is easy. Not sure why anyone would ever want to lift their head between shoots, not so much for speed but for the need to maintain constant cheek-weld and body position.

Depending on when and were I'd like to join you guys..

Again I have to hand it to you, It takes a lot of energy and time to scout locations and make sure you even on the land we think we are. Private land can be hard to come by. When shooting 2 to 3+ Kilometers, if on BLM we often find that we shoot from one quad of BLM land over private rights, landing in another quad of BLM land. We don't want to shoot or land in the wrong place. BLM overlays are critical to have with us and a live GPS to prove you are where we think we are. I have most of the overlays for Ca and Nevada. If you send me a PM with the coordinates of both positions I can run a BLM overlay for you. And then one without.

Without the overlay you get something like this:

Thanks for your post and you are most certainly welcome to shoot with us.
We only fire single shot so no magazine full of ammo is allowed. All actions single feed. I will include a picture of my sure feed to show you how we feed the rifles. Most shooters lay a towel down and put 10 rounds out.
I don't like think about the number of shots fired so the surefeed works great.
I just got an e-mail saying the target systems will go out 3/11/15 and we went with 6 instead of 4 adding $2000 to the tag.
I am now bringing 6 gongs at 118 pounds each.
Those groups are phenomenal for 2000 yards. Very few shooters have a sub 3 inch group at 1000 yards.
