    Why is this bullet good?

Asking because I need to rework loads for older Rem700V 308. Originally shot 165bthp Sierra Game King over 4064 in Federal match cases; it worked well for target and for Wyoming antelope. Have not reloaded for it in long time; lost notes. I had picked that 30 years ago because the bullet was close in performance to 168 MatchKing. And 4064 has long worked well in 308 and 30-06.

That combo easily shrunk below 1MOA with no mods to the rifle, and worked well to 400 yards on antelope(my longest shot).

Just considering alternative bullets and powder.

I wonder about the new rifles and all the work folks need on them. Out of the box, my ~1985 700V has been a tack driver.

Because it has a higher BC than the 168's and shoots very well in almost every 308.

Late to the thread, but there are some thoughts on optics for those in the market:
Weaver Tactical FFP 3-15x has very nice glass and costs less than the comparable Viper PST FFP. It comes in two varieties, illuminated and none. The illuminated can be had just under $800, with the other around $675. You can find them both on Optics Planet and Amazon. Nice positive clicking and locking turrets. If you are on a much smaller budget then definitely look at Primary Arms' 4-14x FFP mil-mil. It's not illuminated and goes for $230. This is the scope the Military Arms Channel chose for their 1000 yards for $1000 project Savage build. There is a newer version of it that is partially illuminated and has their ACSS BDC reticle for $280.

As for bullets, in addition to Federal Gold Match... a lot of good things have been said for Hornady's A-MAX also.

I purchased my Rem700 SPS Tactical in December and it's come a long way since then. I finally received my bolt back from being cerakoted so I finally get to take it out this weekend. The only thing I've kept original is the barreled action. I held off on truing it until I put some rounds through it to see where the barrel is at. I put a McMillan A5 adjustable stock in desert camo, APA bottom metal and Little Bastard Gen II brake, Nightforce rail, Vortex precision rings, Hollands Signature anti cant, Atlas bipod, Alpha Industries mags, Viper PST 6-24x50 Riflescope FFP EBR-2C MRAD Reticle, Tactical knob / hexed bolt shroud / fluted bolt from Karl Kampfeld and all metal cerakoted brown sand.

Truing the receiver without fitting a new bolt won't gain you anything, but rebarreling without truing or a new bolt will give huge accuracy gains.

Along with truing and a new bolt, you will also need to rebarrel as the original barrel won't fit the receiver anymore after truing so realistically figure on $1000 when you are ready to rebuild the gun.
                    $350 barrel blank
                    $200 oversized bolt
                    $50 muzzle brake
                    $30 recoil lug
                    $350 gunsmithing

Oh lol. I was gonna suggest a 2.5-10x32 if you wanted to keep things a little smaller, but the 44mm is solid since the r700 tactical itself is not considered a small hunting rifle. Short, but that barrel is beefy.
                          All deer will die. Lol.
Need a brake. I always suggest a $53 surefire procomp, but I just got a $58 pws fsc30 takeoff from a scar for my 308. It has the fn logo on it too.

And then, get the new magpul stock when it comes out next month. That would be sweet.

Don't follow this advice since it is largely based on promo videos and brand rather than performance of the stock. If you like the Magpul stock, great. But don't be buying it simply because it's Magpul and looks cool. It's not going to be high end stock and most people would probably be better off getting a used HS for the same price.

The Hunter 700 will be a great seller. It's Magpul and looks cool!
It's also way cheap AND magpul developed a new aics pmag to go with it. Everyone loves pmags.
