Wow, thanks for all the great info gentlemen!! I REALLY like the look of your guy's breaks that look like they are basically part of the barrel! Really slick looking!

Triggs - I'm located in Livermore and am still looking for somewhere to do the threading/cutting. Wanting to get 2" cut off, then threaded. I have heard the name "Spartan" tossed around for bay area barrel work, so i will probably be giving them a call to get it done ASAP. Curious, what kind of turn around time did you see for your rifle's work?

Spartan is a very busy company but for doing the cut and thread they can knock that out while you wait.

He did mine in an hour last Saturday.

Read some reviews, decided to go with a JEC Custom 308 brake. Also looked at the APA fat bastard v2 but can't justify spending twice as much for a range toy.

I see many websites offering breaks ask you to specify the diameter wanted.. Can anyone tell me the correct diameter to buy for the varmint barrel on the 5-r chambered in .308 so that the break looks like it's just an extension of the barrel?

It will be around 0.835", but could easily be +/- 0.010" from that.
NO brake is going to seamlessly align without having the barrel and the brake blended together.
In order to do that, you are going to need the brake slightly oversized and then the whole barrel and brake get refinished after the brake is installed.
That is the only way to get a seamless installation.

I have a Center Shot Rifles brake. It works great but bought a Lil Bastard Gen 2 to try it out. I like the fact that it's so easy to remove for cleaning.

I got to take my Lil Bastard Gen 2 out this weekend and it is a great brake. It really is amazing how much difference the rifle is with a good brake on the end of the barrel.

The Lil Bastard is very easy to remove and put on the end of the barrel, only hand tighten the nut to the barrel and or very minimal tightening with a wrench. So yes it is easy to take off to clean. Or if you are in a competition that does not allow brakes to be used, very easy to remove.

OP if you're local to Socal you may want to talk to Randal at 700barrels.com He can thread your barrel and have the threads timed so the brake is spot on for alignment without the need of a crush washer.

Also if you measure your barrel diam. Ross will have the brake taper to your barrel's diam for a perfect fit when mounted.

This is the exact route I think I will be going with my build. Randall seems to be the man around these parts, so Randall, if you're up for it, feel like cutting 2" off a barrel and threading a break on there for me?

Is the under-side of the Ross Schuler brakes smooth with no ports/holes? I want to avoid dust kick if I can.
