    Springfield 1911 question...

I'm considering a Springfield 1911 Loaded in 9mm but I don't like the sights. Can the sights be replaced without any tooling to the slide? I like the 3 dot tritium on the SA Loaded 45ACP but they won't work on the 9mm (tooling is required along with it just will not look right).

If the sights can (aesthetically) be replaced, any recommendations?

Harrison offers a one-dot rear sight in the necessary LPA cut. Dawson only has a replacement adjustable sight in the LPA cut. I'm not sure anyone else deals with the LPA cut.

      Check brownells for sight options

Explore handgun parts (1,428) at Brownells, including slides, barrels, and triggers to repair, upgrade, or customize your handgun for improved performance.

part # 100-002-628WB = adjustable night sight LPA cut.

The pistol you are considering to purchase has gotten very popular recently. Springfield dropped the model that was roster approved for us. Another person posted something saying that Springfield would keep it going for us in CA but in small numbers. I bought mine last week on GB as i could not find a local dealer with one. Even on GB their aren't that many out their new or used. Just curious but if it is mainly used as a target punching tool what is wrong with adjustable sights? I have 1911's in both fixed and adjustable sights but usually prefer my adjustable ones as i can fine tune them for point of aim. I like a 6 o'clock hold on my target or paper punching guns. I am not trying to argue the point with you. I am just interested on your take of why one over the other. Great choice BTW.

I also believe that person was wrong about it being made for Cali still. I called Springfield and they claimed it was being discontinued.

I went for the SA Loaded SS in 9mm for a few reasons: I can introduce my nieces and nephews to a 1911 without the bite of a 45ACP. Also, I think the 9MM is a better investment (i.e.: retain its value better then the more common 45ACP version).

As I understand, while the SA Loaded 9mm is on the roster through this year, it has been discontinued (you have to dig deep...really deep to find mention of it on the SA site)....and I did just order one via Grab-A-Gun. I did find about four on-line but GAG was by far the least expensive. There are two that I know of in brick and mortar stores around L.A. but both were a few dimes shy of $1,000.

As for the sights, I like color contrast (white dots). I have only shot the Loaded in 45ACP which has the 3 dot sights (which I prefer). I may like the adjustable sights but like to know what my options are if I don't.

I was also told by Springfield that the Loaded 9mm is out of production and is not included in their 2015 catalog. Kentucky Gun Co has a great price when available. Found it in three LGS with prices between $955-1099 plus tax and DROS.

I paid $860 shipped. During my research that is also about the price of an SA Loaded in 45ACP (a trusted FFL on-line selsl the 45ACP for less) while the 9mm mostly hovered between $925 - $1,000 (shipped excluding tax).

I think those that are available have been in dealer's inventory since pre-2015. My hunch is they are no longer being produced.

Price is going to stay high for awhile as they have become hard to find (someone has a NIB in the sales forum for $1,100 - http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s....php?t=1033462).

OP, I already looked into replacing the sights and yes, you need special tools. Other option is to bring it to a gunsmith. After long debate, I decided not to mess with the factory site settings...

That person may have been me.

My email question to SA: "with the Loaded 9mm falling off the catalog, can tell me if there are any new full size 1911 9mm being considered in the near future."

Per response from Patti B. ext 8924: "we will still be manufacturing the 9mm for the state of California. So, they will be not as plentiful, but still can be found."

Regardless, I say get one while you can. You won't be disappointed.

For range only the stock sights may be fine, but for any action pistol work be advised there is very little white space on either side of the front blade. The stock adjustable also has very sharp corners which would not be friendly to rapidly clearing a malfunction. Dawson also makes an adjustable LPA-cut rear sight which looks to be better machined.

Yes you do need special tools. Your options are:

                            - Placing the slide on a vise grip and hammer the sights out with a pin punch. Cost the least but I don't think anyone would recommend that, as it requires a lot of practice to not scratch your gun/sights
                            - Use a sight install tool. There are many cheap ones on Ebay starting at $45. Take it slow, wrap everything in masking tape while using it, and it works just fine.
                            - Let a gunsmith do all the work.

I just discovered some LPA sights from a company called Kensight Manufacturing. Brownell's carries them. I know nothing about their products. Might be worth a look. Anybody used Kensight?
