No, not advisable. The 229 can go from 40 to 357sig to 9 without issues. According to Sig it is not a good idea to go from 9 up though. The 228 only ever came in 9 so taking it to 40 would most likely cause issues.

i thought of that as well, but this was too cheap to pass up. im out 142.00 bucks ( i had some ebay bucks to use ) and i have spare parts. I was not sure if the barrel will fit the slide at the front, i had read somewhere (haha internet) that the claim is the 229-1/9mm bbl is a little sloppy fit in the 229 slide. I cant confirm this, but maybe you can?

I've heard the same, but I never had any issues with mine going from .40 to 9mm. Mine was a Sig barrel not aftermarket, I think that might be some part of the stories about fit problems.

          Wow
So unofficially the barrel from sig will work. Most interesting. Thank you for that information. I was looking for some confirmation that combo would work but it was pretty vague.
          Thanks again.

I don't know if a 228 barrel is exactly the same as the 229's. The slide is slightly different on the 229 (thicker). A 9mm 229 barrel is what I had. When I went to Sig's armorer's course it was suggested going down in caliber 40 to 357 or 9 is fine, but going up from 9 to 40 or 357 is not a good idea without changing out additional parts, of course 40 and 357 will go back and forth all day without issues. Now things may have changed since I went to the course, but that's what we were told back then.

Took her out for a test run. Performance was better than anticipated. Smooth shooting, recoil almost non existent. Accuracy better than me. All in all im happy and now have a beater slide.

sorry about the flyers, still automatically shoot at the 6 oclock.

                  FYI,
i used my 229/40 mags. They work ok, about 99-98 % if you dont load them all the way. I can fit 14-15 in the mag but reliability is awful. As long as i kept it to 10 o 12 it seemed to feed fine. The factory italian mags work much better than the usa made replacements.
I swapped back and forth to see the difference in recoil, site, and such. My conclusion? it works pretty good, i would suggest getting 9mm mags if your gonna be serious about a dedicated 9mm/229/228. I did it for sh*ts and giggles and camping. I didnt want to get 9mm mags, as i have alot of 40's and dont want to mix them up.
This is my findings and your mileage may vary.
